An opportunity has arisen within the Ultrasound departments
at Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
We are looking to recruit a motivated
sonographer to join the team for a fixed term 12 month period to cover maternity leave.
We would welcome applications from sonographers who
hold a CASE accredited post graduate certificate/diploma or BSc in medical ultrasound.
All applicants must have recent experience of practising as an independently reporting sonographer within the NHS.
We require a minimum of obstetrics/ gynae or abdominal ultrasound competency.
Base site for this post would be Worcestershire Royal Hospital however you may be expected to work at other Trust sites such as Kidderminster Imaging Centre if service requires.
Sonographers report independently but robust Radiologist
support is available.
As a forward thinking department we participate in training
of PG Ultrasound students, undergraduate sonographer students, scanning
midwives and also medical staff requiring clinical ultrasound experience.
Ultrasound at Worcestershire Royal Hospital is sonographer
led and as a result we are forward looking, promoting career development, with

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be expected:
To work as an Advanced Practitioner (sonographer)
undertaking a wide range of examinations demonstrating excellence in these to a
high professional standard.
To provide specialist information by performing,
interpreting and reporting examinations as per departmental protocols. Ensuring
that reports are generated promptly, and that any urgent findings are acted
upon in the patient's best interest.
To inform patients of their scan results when
appropriate, within the standards set by the HCPC if appropriate.
Supervise and assist other appropriate
personnel to perform their duties as andwhen required.
To have a flexible attitude towards the hours of
work and participate in work and duties as required relevant to the
directorate. To participate in any out of hours rota already established or
established in the future.
To be responsible for workflow within the area of
work ensuring that clinical requests are acted upon as appropriate.
Checking patients details prior to examination, ensuring that such details are present and
correct on the request. (PAUSED and checked) To ensure that images are
recorded, and report issued with correct patient details.
To participate in management of waiting list by
vetting examination requests in a timely and effective manner.
To be aware of personal professional
development and to maintain a portfolio.

To work autonomously as a sonographer undertaking a range of ultrasound examinations
To independently produce timely high quality ultrasound
reports often interpreting highly complex features
To have specialist knowledge experience and
skills in ultrasound at post graduate level
To act as a role model providing support to
qualified and unqualified staff
To be involved in teaching of ultrasound to
student sonographers midwives and registrars
To ensure that patients are professionally
cared for during the examination and their time in the department and when
necessary break bad news in a sensitive and compassionate manner
To supervise junior staff assistants and
students.
The post holder will be expected to be
autonomous in and develop their clinical practice scanning and range of
ultrasounds examinations and interpreting and reporting on the findings
Clinical and Service Provision:
To work as a sonographer
undertaking a range of ultrasound examinations performing these to a high
professional standard
To provide
specialist information by performing, interpreting and reporting examinations
as per departmental protocols. Reports should be generated promptly on the
Radiology Information System (CRIS) ensuring that any urgent findings are acted
upon appropriately as per directorate standard operating procedure
Ensure that
appropriate follow up investigations are suggested discussing this with a
radiologist when necessary

death/abnormality in a sensitive and empathetic way and to provide help and
support to colleagues with respect to this
To assess the
patients physical and psychological suitability for transvaginal ultrasound
before deciding to proceed with the examination and obtaining consent for the
procedure to be undertaken
To be responsible
for individual workflow ensuring that scans and reports are expedited in
timely manner
To advise on the
booking of appointments examination preparation and liaise with staff
regarding emergency referrals and queries
Supervise junior staff assistants and students when required
To
ensure that patients are cared for in the department especially in their
own area of work To communicate to patients and others any delays
likely to affect them
