Lead Midwife Sonographer - Maternity

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dynamic Sonographer to join our Women's and Children's Division. Based predominantly at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, but with the opportunity for cross site working across the county you will become an essential part of our well established and friendly team. The successful candidate will work as a specialised sonographer across a wide range of services including a variety of complex clinical presentations. In addition to demonstrating a high level of technical expertise and maintaining a high standard of care, they will be responsible for developing and implementing departmental protocols and working collaboratively with the wider team.

Main duties of the job

Provision of efficient, safe, evidence based ultrasound services

Provide professional leadership and line management of all Midwife Sonographers within the service

Undertake regular quality audits

Lead on the department's clinical governance and risk management programmes

Develop and advance failsafe services within the department to prevent avoidable incidents

Contribute to the development of strategic advances within local and national guidance

Oversee the efficient and effective management of the clinical workloads within the department to meet both long and short-term demands

Actively participate in MDT meetings

Forge meaningful and effective relationships with both the Directorate and Divisional Teams

Job description

Job responsibilities

Work as an independent, autonomous and expert practitioner within obstetric ultrasound, with responsibility for the day-to-day organisation and associated duties of leading this service.

To practice in accordance with the appropriate professional bodys professional, ethical, and legal codes (Nusring & Midwifery Council, Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Society of radiographers Professional Code of Conduct, PHE) and the Trust and NHS protocols and guidelines.

To ensure skills are up-to-date and relevant to the role, to follow relevant Trust policies and professional codes and to be accountable for own practice and maintenance of professional registration.

Perform ultrasound examinations including early pregnancy,1st trimester screening, 2nd trimester anomaly scans, 3rd trimester growth/Doppler/LV/placental location/presentation/IUD confirmation scans.

Support and manage your team of sonographers when complicated cases present.

Undertake a wide and comprehensive range of obstetric ultrasound examinations in accordance with the protocols and guidelines set out by the Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme, Public Health England, RCOG and BMUS.

Produce a comprehensive report, which provides diagnosis and recommendations to assist the referring clinician in plan of care depending on findings.

Lead the development and implementation ofpolicies and guidelines for the Trust, in line with the latest national FASP, RCOG and NICE guidelines.

The SSS21 will be responsible for clinical training and support of colleagues in relation to the measurements for combined test i.e. NT and CRL.

The SSS21 will be responsible for the internal quality assurance to ensure improvements in practice can be achieved and maintained.

As the SSS21, you will liaise with the Downs Syndrome Screening Quality Assurance Support Service (DQASS) to facilitate a high quality local screening programme for Downs, Patau and Edwards Syndromes.

As the SSS21 you will devise and implement supportive action plans where required, will also monitor progress and resolution of these action plans.

As the SSS21 you will liaise with ultrasound practitioners, the trusts antenatal and Newborn board, the screening laboratories, screening and immunisation lead and teams (SILs) and regional quality assurance team (RQAT).

As the SSS21 you will maintain departmental record of training, support and both internal and external quality assurance.

As the SS21 you will be responsible for KPI data collection, monitoring and submission on quarterly basis.

Actively take part in local MDT, Obstetric Ultrasound meetings and any other meetings at directorate level if the Obstetric scan service provision needs to be examined/improved.

Lead the development and implementation of new service for the directorate in any required obstetric ultrasound service improvements, business plans and reviews.

Advise the directorate on the best way of developing and implementing service improvements, related to obstetric scanning, to ensure the provision of best practice, in line with the latest national recommendations.

Ensure that new practice implementation will be performed in timely and safe manner to keep in line with any new national recommendations

Provide supervision, support and education to qualified and unqualified staff working in the Directorate

Advise on the purchasing of new ultrasound equipment and equipment related to the ultrasound service, making sure that best standards and quality assurance are delivered.

Ensure correct and timely maintenance of the ultrasound equipment within the Department and will report/arrange any repairs required.

To maintain accurate records relating to all aspects of role.

To ensure the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, recommending replacement of equipment and maintenance of that equipment in collaboration with the directorate management team.

To perform Medical/Clinical Audit of examinations, quality assurance image review.

To lead KPI data collection, monitoring and submission within set deadlines

To inform and discuss with the Director of Midwifery /Directorate Manager of any service concerns that may impact on safety or quality of the service.

Lead clinical training for the multi-disciplinary team, develop and deliver training packages to move the service forward in line with the latest national recommendations and guidelines such as FASP, SBLs, RCOG, BMUS and NICE.

Be responsible for the production and implementation of an induction programme for midwife sonographers and to continuously monitor their progress, development and competency ensuring that high standards are established, documented, and maintained.

Provide supervision, support and education to registered and non- registered staff working in the team.
