Job summary

We are looking for highly enthusiastic, skilled, caring and compassionate Healthcare Assistants who have a passion for womens health to join our team on the Emergency Gynaecology Assessment Unit and Gynaecology Inpatient Unit.

We provide a 24 hour emergency gynaecology service and admissions unit for emergency and elective admissions over seven days a week. We have a friendly and skilled nursing team working closely with the medics who will support you to provide a high standard of patient care.

This is an interesting, varied and emotionally demanding area of nursing which is hugely rewarding and we are keen to help you develop to your full potential in this appealing role. You will report to the registered nurses and will need excellent communication skills to engage with patients and colleagues at all levels. You will be encouraged to broaden your skills and knowledge within the field of gynaecology and early pregnancy.

We have a number of roles, full or part time. Day shifts are seven in the morning to seven thirty in the evening and vice versa on night shifts. There are more night shifts than day shifts due to our new staffing model.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties

The healthcare assistant will work as part of the nursing team supporting professionally qualified staff in providing quality care for patients in roles, which are mainly related to direct patient care.

Direct delivery of high-quality patient care ensuring that the dignity and privacy needs of patients are met.

Documentation of care provided using digital systems.

Overseeing of the maintenance of a clean, welcoming and therapeutic environment.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

To support professionally qualified staff in providing quality care for patients in roles, which are mainly related to direct patient care this is a generic job description, which covers the range of duties that a healthcare assistant may be required to undertake.

Key Duties

  • To accompany patients where clinical support is indicated

  • To chaperone patients as required

  • To undertake basic observations such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, height and weight measurements, record and report results to qualified staff

  • To ensure that patients receive care appropriate to their needs

  • To assist in the setting up and cleaning of clinic spaces, trolleys and disposal of clinical waste

  • To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies

  • To answer telephone calls and take messages informing appropriate persons of the call

  • To assist in the transferring of patients using correct manual handling techniques and equipment as appropriate

  • To report to qualified staff, without delay, any observed change in a patients condition or any concern expressed by a patient about nursing care or medical treatment

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Health and Safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment

  • To maintain professional and personal development

  • Use of phlebotomy skills if appropriately trained

  • Undertake mandatory and local training appropriate to the role

  • To act always in a manner which promotes positive working relationships and maintains the professional image of the Trust

Communication and Relationships

  • The Healthcare Assistants relationship with both staff and patients should be discreet, bearing in mind that all information regarding patients must be kept confidential

  • Report to the nurse-in-charge of department matters of concern relating to patients and the department environment

  • Answer the telephone, referring to the appropriate person when required

  • Be aware of the need to greet visitors to the department and ascertain the reason for their visit

  • Ensure the privacy and dignity of patients at all times

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment

  • To attend departmental meetings as appropriate

Administrative

  • To undertake a range of clerical duties including

  • Reception and telephone duties

  • Basic computer skills and use of Trust IT systems

  • Stock control and ordering

Cleaning

  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the area and equipment as instructed and complete all necessary paperwork relating to this in line with trust guidelines.
