Job summary
We are very excited to announce that we are offering a level 6
Apprenticeship in Therapeutic Radiography. Once qualified as a therapeutic radiographer you will be
part of a multidisciplinary team treating patients with cancer using radiation.
The apprenticeship will run over 3 years and 3 months, comprising of: -
On the job training based within the radiotherapy department
housed in the Oncology Centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital
Off the job training - following
an integrated timetable with Sheffield Hallam University.
Completion of a BSc (Hons) degree in Therapeutic
Radiography, approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
The post is 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday (this includes study
time).
Applicants must be able to evidence Maths and
English GCSE grade C/4 or above or functional skills for both at level 2 and
evidence of study at level 3 or above (please see personal specification for
full details of entry requirements for the University).
Interviews will be held jointly with Sheffield Hallam
University.

Main duties of the job
The apprentice will be based as an
employee within Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS trust as an apprentice
radiographer under the Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship Programme,
committing themselves to train as a radiographer meeting the clinical and
academic requirements of the course.
The apprentice
will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the
role within the service and through completion of the degree apprenticeship
programme which includes working in a variety of clinical placements and
delivery of person centred care.
The apprentice
will work towards attainment of a Level 6 BSC (Hons) degree qualification
through a Level 6 apprenticeship.
The
apprentice will work alongside the multidisciplinary team within the
radiotherapy department whilst they train to be a therapeutic radiographer
under the direct supervision of a registered practitioner. The post holder will
be required to work shifts as required by the department (from 07:15 until
20:00).
The successful
applicant must be prepared to undertake any formal or informal study and
training required to fulfil the needs of the post. There will be a minimum of
20% protected study time (equivalent to 1 day per week).
Upon successful
completion of the apprenticeship the post holder will gain a BSc (Hons) in
Therapeutic Radiography and will be eligible to apply for registration with the
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Therapeutic Radiographer.

administration staff and other members of the MDT to facilitate the
co-ordination of patient appointments.
To
identify the patient as per trust policy
Under
the supervision of a registered practitioner operate radiotherapy equipment in
both the treatment areas as well as in the pre-treatment area.
Under
the supervision of a registered practitioner carry out machine QA.
Under
the supervision of a registered practitioner follow departmental procedure for
equipment shutdown.
Move
patients and heavy equipment using safe and approved techniques and aids,
updating Manual Handling training annually in line with Trust policy.
To
ensure professional appearance and a high standard of hygiene is maintained at
all times in compliance with the trusts uniform policy.
Take a flexible approach in supporting colleagues during times of
workload pressure
To
act within professional and legal frameworks taking responsibility and
accountability for all aspects of ones own work.
To
be an active member of the teams learning process such as in service training,
staff meetings, training sessions, insight visits, shadowing, external courses
and reflective practice. To share skills

Patient care:
Under
the supervision of a registered practitioner assess patients medical condition
monitor their progress during treatment and any significant changes are
reported to your supervising radiographer.
Under
the supervision of a registered practitioner provide written and verbal
information to patients and carers on all aspects of Radiotherapy treatment and
its associated side effects ensuring that explanations are appropriate to the
patients comprehension and level of understanding.
Under
the supervision of a registered practitioner educate, motivate and reassure
patients to ensure consent to and compliance with treatment regimens which may
be arduous and poorly tolerated, assessing the patients physical and emotional
state on a daily basis to ensure fitness for treatment.
Education
The
post holder will make a commitment to study both at work and at home during the
duration of the apprenticeship course
Maintain
a learning journal of the 20% off-the-job learning required to meet the
apprenticeship standard.
Attendance
of the Universities teaching session are mandatory (either e-learning, virtual
tutorials or on site tutorials), annual leave is to be taken outside of the
universities teaching sessions.
To
be prepared to undertake any formal or informal training required to fulfil the
needs of the post. This includes
self-study.
Take
responsibility for the quality of your own work and keep your manager informed
of how the work is progressing, addressing any queries or concerns in a timely
manner
