Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen within Birch Day Case Unit at the Alexandra
Hospital, Redditch for 1.0 WTE Band 2 HCA.
We
are looking for a highly motivated individual who is keen to work in a busy and
growing environment within an extremely supportive team.
The
unit takes various surgical specialties such as general surgery, urology,
gynaecology, orthopaedics and vascular surgery.
We
have also expanded care into interventional radiology.
The unit currently has 27 mixed chairs and trolley spaces in use
at any one time which are reused over the day to maximise the volume of
patients that come through our unit.
Currently
the hours will be split from Monday to Friday anytime between 7am and 8pm. You
will be required to work a mix of shift patterns and be flexible. Weekend
working may be something that will occur in our future alongside an extension
to current opening times.
We

Main duties of the job
Your role as a HCA on this unit differs from a standard ward role, as a majority of our patients are ambulatory and self caring. Your role is to support the Registered Nurse with the admission process, post-operative care and subsequent discharge of the patient. Purpose
The Health Care Assistant is a member of the ward team who implements prescribed care and or undertakes activities
as directed by a Registered nurse.
1.Assist with the maintenance
of patient hygiene
- Washing and bathing the patient in
bed or at bedside and in bathroom, using hoists as appropriate.
- Care of patients mouth, give
mouthwash, clean teeth and care of dentures.
- Care of hair washing in bathroom,
combing and brushing.
- Care and cleaning of nails.
2. Assist with
feeding of patients
- Assist with patients to choose
appropriate food and drink.
- Serving of patient meals and
cleaning up afterwards.
- Assist individual patients with
feeding.
- Report on patients intake and record
on chart as appropriate.
- Preparation of beverages and water
jugs as required.
3. Assist with
patients elimination needs
- Giving of bedpans and urinals.
- Collecting and cleaning of bedpans and
urinals.
- Escort of patients to and from the lavatory.
- Care of incontinent patients.
- Record outputs where appropriate.
- Collecting and testing urine
samples.
4. Additional
aspects of care
- Assisting with the recording and
safe keeping of patients property and valuables.
- Moving and repositioning of
patients.
- Dressing and undressing of patients.
- Making of occupied and unoccupied
beds, tying up of dirty linen bags and despatching to laundry.
- Cleaning and tidying all areas of
the unit.
- Replenishing of linen or stock
cupboards.
- Assist with patients mobilisation,
ensuring safe environment and using appropriate techniques.
- Accompany able patients to other
departments.
- Assist with occupational,
physiotherapy and recreational activities.
- Assist in the care of relatives and
visitors.
- Assist with the care of patients in
isolation.
- Chaperone professional staff where
appropriate.
- Measuring body temperature, pulse
rate, Blood pressure and respirations and completing the necessary
documentation NEWS and reporting findings back to the Registered Nurse.
- Measuring patients height and
weight as directed by a registered nurse and recording on the appropriate
documentation.
- Be involved in patient booking in, admission, introducing patients to ward area as directed by
registered nurse.
- Be adaptable and flexible to working
in various areas of the ward as required.

prepare and support patients undergoing treatment and, or investigations maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.

towards attaining competency.

5. Communication and
relationships
- The Healthcare Assistants
relationship with both staff and patients should be discreet, bearing in mind
that all information regarding patients must be kept confidential.
- Report to the nurse in charge of the
ward matters of concern relating to patients and the ward environment.
- Answer the telephone, refer to
appropriate person.
- Attend ward reports and
meetings when appropriate.
- Be aware of the need to greet
visitors to the ward / department and ascertain the purpose of their visit.
- Demonstrate knowledge and
understanding of health and safety at work in order to maintain a safe
environment.
- Undertake duties outside your
working area (e.g. delivery and collection) to assist in maintaining good
communications.
- To ensure the privacy and dignity of
patients at all times.
- Hold a designated Link Nurse role as
allocated by the Ward Manager, attend study days for this and feedback to the

involve

- Basic computer skills and have
knowledge of Trust IT programmes post induction training and utilise these
systems as part of the job role.
