Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a successful candidate to join our A&E Reception team.

The Emergency Department provides 24-hour emergency care to all patients arriving in the department. This busy department has an opportunity to assist with the reception service. You will be part of a team that comprises of doctors, nurses, and clerical and administrative staff, whose aim is to provide a high standard of service to patients and relatives attending the Emergency department.

Main duties of the job

To work as a team member booking in patients whether walk ins or by ambulance. Dealing with enquires for the Emergency Department, providing a reception service to the department including dealing with patients and visitors to the Department in a customer focused manner, and ensuring that patients are registered accurately. To liaise with Dr's and Nurses assisting with patient documentation and queries.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To deal with all patients and visitors to the department, taking accurate and essential registration details from them.

To receive telephone enquiries from all areas of the Trust and other external agencies and also calls from often anxious and distressed relatives and friends of patients whilst at all times maintaining a high level of patient confidentiality.

To ensure that all clinical coding of patient information is entered onto the A&E computer system accurately.

Registering and admission of patients onto hospital Oasis computer system once they have been transferred to a ward. Tracking and producing hospital case notes on the Oasis computer system.

Providing patients with appropriate follow up appointment i.e.: A&E follow up, Fracture Clinic and various Out Patient appointments- provision of hospital unit numbers for the Fracture Clinic and Out Patients and registration of the patient onto the hospital system if they do not already have a unit number.

Out of hours provision of unit numbers and NHS numbers for wards for emergency treatment i.e.; Wards

Obtaining and relaying accurate information to the on call Manager where appropriate out of hours.

Dealing with bereaved relatives and friends who are booking Mortuary viewings and obtaining relevant information from them tactfully and compassionately and ensuring that the appropriate people are informed of diary bookings.

Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team in sometimes stressful and traumatic situations.

Preparation of notes for optical scanning and scanning notes onto optical scanner.

Ability to prioritize workload according to demands of the department.

Retrieval of existing A&E records at the request of medical and nursing staff in the department.

Finding relevant cover for reception staff sickness at short notice.

Retrieving audit notes at the request of A&E medical and nursing staff.

Referring patients to a member of medical or nursing staff if their condition gives cause for concern.

To be able to deal with all sensitive situations that may arise with tact and understanding and observe absolute confidentiality of all information obtained in the course of work.

Maintain accurate patient records within the department ensuring that all blood forms, x-ray reports etc are filed appropriately.

Mentor new members of staff.

To be conversant with Trust computer software packages i.e.: e-mail, intranet and Patient Information System EZ Notes.

To comply with Trust Policies and Procedures.
