Job summary

This post is a new joint consultant appointment between the Microbiology department (in the Specialised Clinical Services Division) and the Infectious Diseases department (which sits within the Specialised Medicine Division), replacing a previous pure Microbiology post.

This is a full time post of 10 PAs. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the employing body in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The post holder, who will sit within the Specialised Clinical Service Division (SCSD), will support the delivery of an integrated infection service across the Trust, which includes laboratory, inpatient and outpatient activity. Pursuit of specialist interests is actively encouraged. All duties are worked flexibly in conjunction with colleagues, and the needs of the service. In addition to core clinical microbiology duties, which include participating in the out of hours Microbiology on-call rota, it is envisaged that the appointee will be actively engaged in clinical liaison and OPAT.

There are opportunities to work with MDTs in orthopaedics, diabetic foot, haematology and TB. Opportunities are also available to work on the ID ward in collaboration with the current Infectious Disease clinicians, if desired. The job plan will evolve according to the interests of the appointee and will be tailored, in discussion with colleagues.

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.

The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc. and job plans may be revised in due course.

The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.

The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.

The post-holder will attend cross county and cross site meetings.

The post holder will collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.

The post holder will participate in core Microbiology service provision including clinical and laboratory liaison, ITU ward rounds and offering Infection Prevention and Control advice. The post-holder will contribute to Infectious Diseases clinics as agreed locally. There is no General Internal Medicine on call rota commitment for this post.

The post-holder will participate in the Microbiology on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Microbiology Consultant colleagues in post. The microbiology on-call rota is shared with microbiology colleagues from Wye Valley NHS Trust.

The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking on-call duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The consultant on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • MRCP or evidence of equivalent training and experience (MRCP non-essential for pure Medical Microbiology applicants)
  • Active participation in a recognised CPD scheme.
