Job summary

An amazing opportunity has become available to join the Cardiac Catheter lab as part of a dynamic and friendly team at Worcester Royal Hospital.

We are a six bedded day case area with two Cardiac Catheter Labs providing both elective and emergency cardiac procedures for the people of Worcestershire.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated nurse to join our team working Monday to Saturday on day shifts, with an on-call service overnight. We provide an emergency service for Primary PCI patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

As a specialist center, we carry out a wide range of specialist cardiac interventions, for elective and in- patients; angiogram, angioplasty, complex device implants, Internal Cardiac Defibrillators, Permanent Pacemakers, Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillators and electrophysiology and ablation.

Our team of nurses have a varied job plan; they can scrub and assist for all procedures, work as a circulating nurse, care for patients pre-peri and post procedure patients and deliver patient education.

This varied and diverse environment ensures no two days are the same. We work closely as part of a multidisciplinary team and cardiology department and are committed to providing high quality patient care and thus applicants need to be highly motivated and keen to expand their knowledge and become part of our team.

We offer a Cardiology Preceptorship as well as Trust Preceptorship and the opportunity to study towards Cardiac Care Pathway at BCU.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible, with the support of the manager, for the day to day, smooth running of the PPCI 24/7 within the Cardiac Catheter Suite.

  • This service will run on a shift rota basis, on-call 24/7.

  • To provide effective leadership and to act as a good role model, working with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.

  • To ensure the maintenance of a high quality patient focussed care at all times through the effective leadership, management of staff and resources.

  • This will include leading a team of nurses to deliver a high standard of care in the areas of pre assessment, pre peri and post procedure care and follow up of angiography, elective/primary/rescue angioplasty and pacemakers and cardioversion patients.

  • To act as team leader for clinical staff.

  • To be responsible for clinical and non-clinical management of a ward area in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse.

Establish and maintain effective communication and foster good working relationships with all multidisciplinary teams, both internal and external.

Provide and receive complex and / or sensitive information from patients and staff. For example, breaking bad news to patients, giving complex information about procedures and their outcomes, dealing with performance issues, holding staff meetings. Ensure that patient care is evidence based and that the patients journey is streamlined. Develop and implement patient pathways as appropriate e.g. Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS), fractured neck of femur etc.

Identify, assess, and act accordingly at any point on the pathway including discharge when patients are no longer meeting the agreed appropriate and safe patient pathway.

Assess and act upon potential problems or issues to ensure a safe, effective environment for staff, patients, and visitors.

Identify, analyse, and act upon staff situations when there is conflict and / or deviation from Trust or local policies and procedures.

Identify, analyse, action and discuss with Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse as appropriate any change management issues that arise.

Assist in planning of duty rotas or alter planned rotas to ensure maximum service delivery, standards of patient care and human, and resource management. Use e-rostering as it becomes available.

Assist Senior Sister / Charge Nurse by utilising available resources to ensure safe and effective patient care e.g. periods of unplanned staff absence and / or equipment failure.
