Job summary
The Health Care Assistant (HCA) is a member of the Endoscopy Department who will work within the decontamination area and help support the nursing staff in providing care for patients in the Endoscopy environment.
The post holder will be required to be trained in the full duties of a decontamination technician in this specialised area.
The post holder will be responsible for all flexible endoscopes in accordance with The Trust and National Decontamination policies and ensure that endoscopes are available for procedures.
The role will also involve undertaking activities as directed by a Registered Nurse in recovery.
The post holder will work towards The Trust's behaviours on a day-to-day basis.
The Endoscopy Unit is currently open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00.
The position will be required to work county wide to meet the demands of the service.
Main duties of the job
To work as part of the team within the decontamination are of the unit, ensuring that scopes are available for procedures
To work in all areas of the endoscopy unit with support from a Registered Nurse.
To be competent in the decontamination of endoscopes and accessories, including the safe handling, storage and traceability of flexible endoscopes in line with BSG guidelines and Trust Policies. To be competent in the use of AER's and drying cabinets, to ensure the departments documented tracking and traceability system is followed throughout the procedure.
To have a basic understanding/knowledge of endoscopy procedures.

To work as part of a team within the decontamination are of the Endoscopy Unit, ensuring that scopes are available for procedure.
To work in all areas of the Endoscopy Unit. To be competent in the decontamination of endoscopes and accessories, including safe handling and storage and traceability of flexible endoscopes in line with BSG guidelines and company policies. to be competent in the use of endoscopy equipment including AER's and drying cabinets. to ensure the departments documented tracking and traceability system requirements and procedure are followed throughout the department.
To have a basic understanding/knowledge of endoscopic procedures.
To read and understand the importance of all water tests, weekly or daily.
To be capable of working alone and unsupervised, but ensure documented operational procedures are adhered to.
To work under supervision but with a need to concentrate at all times. to be able to respond to urgent requests for priority equipment.
To ensure PPE is worn in decontamination are as Trust Policy.
To adhere to the requirements of working in a controlled area and understand COSHH Regulations, especially with regards to hazardous cleaning chemicals. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Helth and safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment.
Ensure area is stocked up and levels maintained.
To work with a Registered Nurse in Recovery, caring for patients that have undergone an endoscopic procedure, be able to undertake basic observations, respond appropriately to emergency situations. Respond to patients request for non-clinical information. Assist in Moving and Handling activities using appropriate equipment ensure the patient is comfortable.
Answer telephone calls and take messages if needed.
To report immediately to the Nurse in charge any observed change in a Patient's condition or any concern expressed by a patient.
Maintain own competence and ensure Mandatory training is kept at 100%.
Attend Daily huddle and departmental meetings as required
To work across sites to maintain services county-wide, this may be at the Alexandra Hospital, Worcester Royal Hospital, Malvern and Evesham Community Hospital.
The Post holder must maintain confidentiality, security and integrity of information relating to patients, staff and other Health Service Business.
The post holder must accept personal responsibility and accountability for Infection Prevention and Control.
It is an expectation that all Health Care Assistants undertake the Trust's Care Certificate course.
