Job summary

The successful post holder will clean, decontaminate and maintain a variety of endoscopes following departmental protocols to agreed standards and be aware of COSHH regulations and the importance of wearing PPE.

In liaison with Decontamination Lead Band 7 and Unit Manager, maintain the overall management of endoscopes and reprocessing machines.

The post holder will be required to train Band 2 / more junior staff, in accordance with departmental competencies, The Trust and National decontamination policies.

Prepare environments for use during endoscopy lists.

Work and assist as a Band 3 in all diagnostic and endoscopic procedures with guidance from a Registered Nurse, working within a competency framework, with support from the Directorate Professional Development Team and the County wide Decontamination Lead.

In conjunction with Unit Manager / Registered Nurses, support, teach and guide other Health Care Assistants to achieve a suitable competency level.

Assist Registered Nurse to provide a high standard of care to patients in the clinical areas. For example, monitoring patients in the recovery area and maintaining a patient's airway during a diagnostic gastroscopy.

Carry out a range of patient care tasks as directed, supported and supervised by a Registered Nurse.

To work County wide as and when needed to meet demands of the service.

The Endoscopy Unit is currently open Monday to Friday 07:30 - 17:30

Main duties of the job

Demonstrate competence in handling, cleaning, decontaminating, tracking and maintaining specialist endoscopy equipment min accordance with local, National and Trust decontamination guidelines and policies.

Demonstrate awareness of COSHH regulations and the importance of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when dealing with contaminated equipment or chemicals.

Guide and support junior members of staff in their development and assist the Unit Manager in the training of all staff in the cleaning and reprocessing of endoscopes.

Ensure that weekly samples are taken according to agreed protocols including daily machine tests and escalate any concerns.

Maintain patient dignity and privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.

Maintain accurate and legible records.

Ensure that all staff are treated with respect.

Ensure that patients and visitors are treated with equality as well as respect.

Communicate effectively with patients using tact, diplomacy, empathy and reassurance during potentially difficult and stressful situations or where there may be a barrier to understanding.

To act in a manner that promotes positive working relationships and maintains professionalism, actively participates in team meeting, team development and service improvement as required.

Supervise and mentor junior staff to reach a level of competence where they excel and can work unsupervised.
