Job responsibilities
To deliver a quality service to
bariatric surgery patients referred to the surgical team at WRH.
To provide specialist dietetic
expertise to the multidisciplinary team and patients referred from Tier 3
services for bariatric surgery.
To assess nutritional requirement of
patients and formulate individual dietary advice in line with NICE guidance and
BOMSS guidelines.
To use motivational and behavioural
change skills to overcome barriers to change.
To assist in the development of
evidence based nutrition literature and resources linked to bariatric surgery.
To assist in the development of
standards and protocols to help effective MDT working across Tier 3 & Tier
4.
To encourage patient to adopt
positive dietary and lifestyle changes.
To promote within MDT and throughout
the patients care pathway the role of the dietitian in obesity management.
To carry out patient satisfaction
survey and respond to suggestions from service users.
To collect statistical and workload
data in a timely way to inform practice.
To help produce reports for the
bariatric service management / improvement as agreed with Advanced Specialist
Dietitian.
To continuously review effectiveness
of dietetic intervention and implement suggestions for changes to ensure the
delivery of a high quality service.
To present findings at MDT meetings.
To participate in audits linked to
bariatric service provision e.g. the National Bariatric Surgical Registry
(NBSR).
To effectively assess patients
suitability for bariatric surgery.
To ensure timely communication with
MDT teams in Tier 3 and Tier 4 in relation to patient referrals.
Too critically review nutrition
articles on diet and morbid obesity and disseminate information to health
professionals.
To provide dietetic cover during
times of leave which includes Tier 3 Weight Management and may include advising
in-patients onwards?
Communications:
To engage with patients in treatment
planning decisions and to formulate a treatment plan jointly with the patient
providing written information where appropriate.
To advise and motivate patients,
relatives, and carers to make positive lifestyle and dietary changes.
To communicate effectively with the
multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives regarding the dietetic component
of patient care, to ensure a seamless service.
To maintain accurate documentation
on-going patient care, including phone contacts in accordance with professional
standards.
To ensure patients are given
Dietitian's name and telephone contact.
To communicate with healthcare professionals
in implementing Trust wide nutrition related policies.
To liaise closely with dietitians
and health care professionals in other hospitals whenever there is a transfer
of patient's care or shared care.
To work with healthcare
professionals to help improve dietetic care and patient experience
To use computer skills to produce
and retrieve clinical information, to communicate to colleagues and for
presentations
Education
and Training:
To maintain own clinical
professional development by a variety of means e.g. attending postgraduate
training courses, journal reviews in order to maintain up to date clinical
knowledge.
To attend study days for health
professionals linked to bariatric surgery and obesity management.
To participate in staff appraisal
scheme both as appraiser and appraise.
To be appraised annually and agree
objectives for the year and a personal development plan. This should take into account personal
objectives with regards to education and development and Trust objectives
including management and service issues.
To attend study days linked to
clinical supervisory skills and student training.
To attend student training
programmes and organise student timetable for the Department.
To be responsible for teaching
dietetic students to graduate level on dietetic skills and knowledge within
core clinical areas.
To give tutorials on clinical topics
to students and colleagues.
To assist and guide junior staff to
deliver a high standard of clinical care.
To contribute to multidisciplinary
training programmes linked to nutrition in the Trust and occasionally to
external organisations.
To participate in training sessions
to educate and update health care professionals in the Trust on nutrition
related topics e.g. to Nutrition Link Nurses, medical students.
To improve quality of care through
innovative ideas.
To participate in the induction and
integration of new staff and students.
To continually reflect on own
practice and participate in peer review.
Organisation
Management:
To prioritise workload and manage
own patient caseload.
To audit attendance rate in
outpatient clinics to help develop an effective dietetic service.
To assist in managing OPD waiting
times to keep these within agreed
standards for surgical obesity service
To use digital dictation to send
letters to referrers in a timely way.
To assist in managing the service
within the resource allocation, reviewing and modifying work practices to
maximise effectiveness.
To contribute to the pro-active
monitoring and review of the Nutrition & Dietetics service.
To provide statistical information
regarding workload as required for managerial purposes by collating data on
telephone call activity as directed.
To assist in the resolution of
service and clinical complaints through investigation, review and practice
change where indicated.
To participate in service
development projects.
Governance:
Clinical:
To allocate time to implement
Clinical Governance projects (minimum 4 per year) linked to CPD.
To contribute to resource
development linked to bariatric services e.g. presentations on nutrition
related topics, nutrition related articles & developing training aids.
To update diet sheets and guidelines
as agreed with Advanced Specialist Dietitian by researching best practice and
liaising with dietitians in other departments.
To collate comments and update
Departmental policies and procedures to ensure they are evidence-based.
To work with the dietitians to
implement Clinical Governance in the Department.
To participate in events linked to
promoting the role of the dietitian in the Acute Trust.
To undertake literature
search/article critique and present findings at departmental meetings.
To carry out clinical audit and
present results to promote evidence-based practice.
Non
Clinical:
To demonstrate a sound understanding
of Clinical Governance and Risk Management and their application to work
situation.
To implement Health & Safety in
the workplace by maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff and
visitors at all times.
To take responsibility for
evaluation and avoidance of risk within department.

ensuring there is adequate cover for clinical work.

To assist with recruitment and
selection of dietitians.
To analyse the service provided,
identify opportunities, make recommendations and implement changes as a result.
To participate in meetings and
maintain good communication levels with department.

innovation and improvement of services.

To communicate effectively and work
collaboratively with medical, nursing, AHPs and colleagues in other agencies to
ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.
To build and maintain relationships
between areas or departments.
Ensure collection and collation of
data to produce relevant statistical information on service delivery. Evaluate where improvement is required
initiating and reviewing change where appropriate.
To identify and address training
needs within the department and specialist areas.
Profession:
To maintain Health Care Professions
Council (HCPC) registration, adhering to the Standards of Conduct Performance

their incorporation into practice as necessary.

Association (BDA) code of conduct.
To provide high quality evidence
based service by researching dietetic information.
To undertake dietetic audits and
surveys.

at all times promoting the role of the Dietitian in the best interest of the
patients and profession.
To take personal responsibility for
the updating of professional skills and developments within the profession by
attending relevant study days, literature review and implementing CPD.

To undertake any other duties which
are applicable to the grade of the post that is considered appropriate by the
