Job summary

This is a specialist post in a county-wide Tier 4 weight management service for a band 6 dietitian or a band 5 dietitian with an interest in weight management and keen to develop their specialist skills in this area.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will manage a caseload of complex patients using specialist evidence-based and/or patient centred principles under the superivion of a highly experienced team lead. This will involve advising patients prior to and following bariatric surgery as an inpatient and outpatient. You will gain indepth MDT working with psychology, surgery and Tier 3 services. The post-holder will also assist the team lead with effective implementation of the surgical bariatric service for adults in Worcestershire.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To deliver a quality service to bariatric surgery patients referred to the surgical team at WRH.

To provide specialist dietetic expertise to the multidisciplinary team and patients referred from Tier 3 services for bariatric surgery.

To assess nutritional requirement of patients and formulate individual dietary advice in line with NICE guidance and BOMSS guidelines.

To use motivational and behavioural change skills to overcome barriers to change.

To assist in the development of evidence based nutrition literature and resources linked to bariatric surgery.

To assist in the development of standards and protocols to help effective MDT working across Tier 3 & Tier 4.

To encourage patient to adopt positive dietary and lifestyle changes.

To promote within MDT and throughout the patients care pathway the role of the dietitian in obesity management.

To carry out patient satisfaction survey and respond to suggestions from service users.

To collect statistical and workload data in a timely way to inform practice.

To help produce reports for the bariatric service management / improvement as agreed with Advanced Specialist Dietitian.

To continuously review effectiveness of dietetic intervention and implement suggestions for changes to ensure the delivery of a high quality service.

To present findings at MDT meetings.

To participate in audits linked to bariatric service provision e.g. the National Bariatric Surgical Registry (NBSR).

To effectively assess patients suitability for bariatric surgery.

To ensure timely communication with MDT teams in Tier 3 and Tier 4 in relation to patient referrals.

Too critically review nutrition articles on diet and morbid obesity and disseminate information to health professionals.

To provide dietetic cover during times of leave which includes Tier 3 Weight Management and may include advising in-patients onwards?

To engage with patients in treatment planning decisions and to formulate a treatment plan jointly with the patient providing written information where appropriate.

To advise and motivate patients, relatives, and carers to make positive lifestyle and dietary changes.

To communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives regarding the dietetic component of patient care, to ensure a seamless service.

To maintain accurate documentation on-going patient care, including phone contacts in accordance with professional standards.

To ensure patients are given Dietitian's name and telephone contact.

To communicate with healthcare professionals in implementing Trust wide nutrition related policies.

To liaise closely with dietitians and health care professionals in other hospitals whenever there is a transfer of patient's care or shared care.

Education and Training:

To maintain own clinical professional development by a variety of means e.g. attending postgraduate training courses, journal reviews in order to maintain up to date clinical knowledge.

To attend study days for health professionals linked to bariatric surgery and obesity management.

To participate in staff appraisal scheme both as appraiser and appraise.

To be appraised annually and agree objectives for the year and a personal development plan. This should take into account personal objectives with regards to education and development and Trust objectives including management and service issues.

To attend study days linked to clinical supervisory skills and student training.

To attend student training programmes and organise student timetable for the Department.
