Job summary
Applications are invited from accredited specialists in Trauma and
Orthopaedics who are on the Specialist Register or within six months of
attaining the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).
Possession of a higher degree, recognised Fellowship experience and proven
research ability is desirable. Applicants will be expected to have a broad
experience in Trauma and General Orthopaedics as well as a specialist interest
in hand surgery

Main duties of the job
1.5 SPA (0.5 to be worked Flexibly)
5.25 PA for DCC
3.25 PA for on call
The Job plan is for
10 PAs and will be reviewed 3-months after commencement.
Job plans are then
be reviewed annually and there will be scope for acquiring extra
sessions/responsibilities following discussion.
Travel is included
within sessional allocations when working at other sites.
Secretarial and
administrative (office) support will be provided
Cross-covering of
post-operative and inpatients by colleagues is routinely provided when the
clinician is off site.

The Countywide T&O Directorate has inpatient trauma at the
Worcestershire Royal Hospital site and elective inpatient orthopaedics at Alexandra
Hospital in Redditch. Kidderminster Treatment Centre treats ambulatory trauma
and elective orthopaedics requiring only day case and overnight stays.
Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH) has a trauma unit accreditation and has facilities
that allows us to offer treatment across a wide range of specialties.
Outpatient clinics are held at all main sites.
All elective inpatient surgery occurs in laminar flow theatres and
care is provided on MRSA free wards used exclusively by the orthopaedic
department for elective surgery. Modern MRI and CT scanning facilities are
available on site.
There are excellent Education
Centres on both main sites, providing state of the art education facilities
accessible twenty-four hours a day, with well-stocked libraries, and free
access to the Internet and Medline.
The successful applicant will join a County wide team of 20
Consultants with ambitious and exciting plans to increase and expand the
Trauma & Orthopaedic Service. The team also consists of 1 Associate
Specialist, an established team of Middle Grades and with support from Allied
Health Professionals compassionate and caring Nurses both on the dedicated
Wards and in Outpatients, there hasnt
been more of an exciting time to join us here at Worcestershire Acute NHS
Trust.
The Trust manages approximately 750 patients per annum with hip
fractures. Prior to 2021, two thirds were managed at the ALX site, but now all
hip fractures are managed on the Worcester Royal Hospital site.

The new consultant will be replacing one of 2 consultant hand surgeons
within the Trust. The post has become vacant due to retirement. There is also
an associate specialist who, together with the consultants, provide a
comprehensive Trauma and Elective hand surgery service to the County of
Worcestershire.
The successful applicant is required to provide on call cover for
general trauma and orthopaedic emergencies in addition to supporting the
emergency and urgent upper limb service. Where appropriate the Trust aims to
manage ambulatory trauma and urgent cases through a Covid free pathway in
line with current infection control guidance.
