JOB DESCRIPTION

Post Title: Clinical Teaching Fellow

Pay Band: FY2+

Hours: 40

Contract: Fixed Term August 2023 August 2024

Location / Department: WAHT Undergraduate Teaching Academy

Accountable to: Head & Deputy Head of WAHT Undergraduate Teaching Academy

Reports to: Head & Deputy Head of WAHT Undergraduate Teaching Academy

Key Working Relationships: Head & Deputy Head of undergraduate academy, clinical skills team, simulation team, medical students from University of Birmingham and Warwick.

Job Purpose:

This is one of a series of posts combining experience in a clinical specialty with undergraduate teaching of medical students at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

This 12-month post is suitable for trainees whose career would be advanced by the opportunity to develop clinical skills along with specialist teaching skills. This might be of interest to registered practitioners who are studying for a higher qualification, writing up research, or applying for higher specialist training rotations, or any combination of these. It may also appeal to higher trainees who wish to take time out of a training programme, subject to the approval of the appropriate Specialist Training Committee. Remuneration for 40 hours will be at the appropriate point on the nationally agreed speciality pay scale for daytime duties. Successful candidates will be required to work across both the Alexandra and Worcestershire Royal Hospital sites.

BACKGROUND TO THE POST

The Trust has for some years provided undergraduate teaching to medical students from the University of Birmingham and the University of Warwick.

Following the University of Birminghams 2014 curriculum review, the College of Medical and Dental Sciences has established a Clinical Teaching Academy at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which provides clinical teaching for years 3, 4 and 5 medical students from the University of Birmingham. Clinical teaching is also provided for graduate entry medical students from the University of Warwick. It is anticipated that Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust will be a site for clinical placements once Three Counties Medical School (Unviersity of Worcester) commences.

These changes have led to an increase in the teaching demands on medical staff and this post is one of a number of Clinical Teaching Fellow posts. Exposure to a clinical speciality of the successful applicants choice will be encouraged.

FACILITIES

There are Education Centres on all three sites, with audio-visual facilities and lecture/seminar facilities. Both the Redditch and Worcester sites have a practical skills room with a ward training bay set out to represent a 3-bed ward, which allows realistic hands on practical education in a safe environment; to facilitate this SimMan/Sim Pad patient simulators are available, in addition to the usual resuscitation training devices.

The library service provides access to a wide range of resources and IT access to Medline and the internet.

The Trust has a well-developed Intranet, which is used extensively for education, publicising Trust policies and clinical protocols, providing access to PACs and pathology results.

Key Duties:

Accountability, with respect to the performance of teaching duties to the Head of Academy.

The post provides the opportunity to study part-time for a clinical educational qualification. This is strongly encouraged.

CLINICAL

The Clinical Fellow will be encouraged to gain exposure to a clinical speciality of their choice for 2 sessions per week.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be allocated a minimum of 7 regular sessions each week to clinical teaching for students. One session per week will be allocated to preparation, audit and CPD. The teaching sessions will be timetabled flexibly to accommodate the students other commitments. Candidates will be required to work across two sites, the Alexandra Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital, in order to accommodate the Undergraduate Academys ability to meet medical student learning outcomes with in the current training programmes.

Otherwise the Fellow will work alongside the other junior doctors in their speciality of choice and undertake general duties.
