ACUTE STROKE UNIT STAFF NURSE

FULL/PART TIME TIME - PERMANENT POST

An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, caring and motivated nurse to join our friendly stroke ward team at Worcestershire Royal Hospital where our services are continuing to evolve following centralisation.

Our Acute Stroke unit is a 20 bedded unit situated next to our ED department and also has 8 monitored HASU beds working on 1:2 nurse to patient ratio. Within the ward we operate a 7 day TIA clinic with dedicated stroke Support worker. We have an established Clinical Nurse Specialist team who are based within the unit and work closely with the nursing team.

The following training / teaching will be offered - ILS course, Swallow assessment screen training, Stroke and HASU workbooks.

Our patients need care 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, so youll need to have flexibility to work day, weekend and night shifts. In return, youll benefit from flexible working patterns and unsocial hours payments and the opportunity to experience working within a friendly supportive team.

We welcome new staff and ensure new members of our nursing team receive appropriate training according to their skills and competences. We offer a comprehensive preceptorship programme and mentors for newly qualified staff. Once you have the relevant experience and competencies there are opportunities available within the Trust to progress to Band 6 and Ward Sister roles

Main duties of the job

Using your clinical experience and skills you will work with your team as a named nurse to maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing.

Acting with compassion you will put patients at the centre of all you do.

You will communicate effectively with patients and their carers regarding their care and educate patients where there is a need.

You will communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high quality patient care.

You will show commitment to sustaining and developing your clinical competence and professional awareness.

Establish and maintain communication with people about routine and daily activities overcoming any differences in communication between the people involved.

Develop own knowledge skills and contribute to the development of others.

Supervise the training of qualified and unqualified staff, and assist junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills in accordance with their level of competence.

To act as a preceptor for junior staff.

To participate in teaching for all learners in accordance with their objectives,

working closely with the Professional Development Team and the University. To provide support and supervision of learner nurses.

Maintain a wide knowledge of current nursing by reading relevant journals and attending study days where appropriate. Promoting the implementation of research based practice.

To participate in teaching programmes and attend mandatory training days.

3. Clinical Governance

Monitor and maintain health and safety and security of self and others in own workplace.

Contribute to quality and improvement.

Support peoples equality, diversity and rights.

To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

To participate in the development and setting of standards, ensuring that acceptable levels are maintained.

Maintain the custody of controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, ordering replacements, checking and administering all drugs according to the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust policy.

Ordering and maintaining adequate stocks of supplies and provisions within the Ward/Department under the supervision of the Ward/Department Sister.

To inform and discuss with the Ward/Department Sister any problems regarding nurse/staff management and/or patient.

To collect information for, and participate in, studies to determine patient dependency and quality assurance.

To take all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents to the Ward/Department Sister and/or Matron, and to monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and economic use of supplies.

Maintain accurate records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used.

Contribute to the implementation of services.

Plan, allocate, assess and provide feedback to team members.

Monitor and maintain physical and/or financial resources for a work area.
