We are excited to announce an opportunity for a Band 6 Senior Occupational Therapist.
This role would be suited to an experienced B5 or existing B6 with a varied
portfolio spanning both physical and Mental Health settings. The ideal candidate
will have experience in the assessment and management of older adults with
complex needs such as cognition, dementia, complex manual handling needs,
palliative and end of life care and Frailty. Working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act
and familiarity with its impact upon the patients decision-making skills is
essential to this role, in order to meet the complex nature of our caseload.
There will also be an expectation to provide advice and support to your MDT
colleagues with regards to maximising patients potential to contribute to
their ongoing care needs.
You will be part of an OT team consisting of a Band 7
Clinical Specialist OT, Band 6 Senior OTs, Rotational Band 5s, Band 4
OT Assistant Practitioners and Band 3 OT assistants and be based at
Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
The post holder will support the Band 7 Clinical Specialist
OTs and Clinical Strategic Lead OT and Clinical Site Lead for Medicine to
develop more modernised OT practices and pathways for this complex cohort of
patients working in partnership with the wider community services.
Main duties of the job
To provide Occupational Therapy service to
patients within care of the elderly wards with a special focus on the
assessment of the acute elderly patients, facilitating and maximising patient
potential within the service boundaries using a holistic approach.
To demonstrate & apply a broad level of
understanding of the effect of mental health in older persons and recommend
appropriate strategies to support the patients within the acute setting and in
their chosen environment when discharged.
To give specialist guidance, advice and
education to other members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) on matters
relating to older people in the context of Occupational Performance and Complex
discharge planning.
Provide leadership for junior team members and
other senior colleagues (in conjunction with the Clinical Leads) in planning,
coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Occupational Therapy service
provided to patients within care of the elderly.
To develop and
maintain strong working links with the Geriatrics Emergency Medicine Service
(GEMS) at Worcestershire Royal Hospital to ensure continuity in Occupational
Therapy practice and delivery.
You will gain mentorship
and support from the Occupational Therapy Clinical Strategic Lead, Clinical Specialists,
especially those within medicine.

Clinical
To carry out specialist
assessments and interventions with patients who have physical, mental health
and/or cognitive deficits. This
will include the administration and interpretation of standardised assessments.
To provide specialist discharge
planning to patients within the acute service and community with a special
emphasis on patients with elderly mental health, cognitive, physical conditions
and complexity within the acute hospital setting which will include working
within tight timeframes for patient discharges.
To regularly support colleagues and other multidisciplinary
team members in joint Mental Capacity Assessments, interpreting findings and
advising and providing patients, relatives and colleagues solutions,
recommendations for short and longer term care arrangements.
To participate and when appropriate organise
Best Interest meetings ensuring adherence to Trust and National guidance and
legislation and that patients have access and appropriate advocacy.
To provide a range of specialist manual
handling assessments and demonstrate a wide and specialist knowledge of manual handling equipment to
support elderly patients with low, high and complex needs; developing comprehensive
care guidance on the manual handling needs of patients before discharge to the
community.
To deal sensitively with patients who may have
high levels of anxiety, fear or aggression due to pain, limited mobility,
frustration, life limiting illness, dementia, frequently throughout the day,
and support your team with such matters. Although not acceptable, some patients
may use verbal or occasional physical aggression towards therapists
To use a high level of emotional effort in
making challenging decisions and carrying out recommendations whilst acting as
patient advocate within situations containing conflicting expectations.
To support and interact appropriately with patients
who may be experiencing depression, difficult family circumstances or poor
prognosis. To facilitate therapeutic treatment through empathic and sensitive
use of motivational skills.
To demonstrate knowledge
and skills of how to support acutely unwell patients including end of
life and palliative care management and provide support to more junior staff
when deaths may occur on the wards or when managing highly sensitive end of

skills of negotiation, persuasion and conflict resolution to encourage patients
that may be unwilling to participate in treatment. Barriers may include (but
