Job summary
A role for a band 8a Matron has arisen to cover two community hospitals within West Essex one in Epping and the other in Saffron Walden, the person appointed will have overall responsibility for 4 wards and an inpatient therapy team.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the senior management team to provide comprehensive, operational, staffing and budget management. The post holder will be responsible for the efficient and effective day-to-day running of the inpatient wards. This will include the delivery of operational performance targets (finance, activity, workforce and quality/safety) along with the achievement of service objectives and compliance with local and national standards relevant to the service area. As a member of the leadership team, the post holder will share responsibility for the implementation of all Trust policies and the service improvement agenda within their area. The post holder, as Modern Matron, will also provide clinical and professional nursing guidance within areas of responsibility regarding operational nursing issues. This will include being the Lead for Discharge Planning and Length of Stay management. The post holder will also be expected to lead on the investigation of complaints as directed by the senior management team.

- To be responsible for all aspects of operational management of wards at St Margarets Hospital Epping and Avocet Ward, Saffron Walden Community Hospital, Saffron Walden.
- To ensure all patients receive safe and compassionate care and experience a great service.
- To effectively manage the budget for areas of responsibility.
- To lead a team of multi-disciplinary clinical staff, ensuring resources are used to maximise the benefit to all patients.
- Take a lead in developing specialist skills within the team to help reduce the demand on acute sector care.
- To ensure the highest levels of cleanliness are maintained in all inpatient areas.
- To take the lead responsibility for the prevention of infection in line with Trust and DH policies and guidelines, ensuring that infection control measures are implemented by all staff, patients and visitors.
- Ensure nursing care is appropriately monitored and audited and learning is shared across the organisation.
- Undertake nursing ward rounds and contribute to case conferences ensuring there is a holistic assessment of patients within the area as required.

Commissioners within a contestable business environment.

carers, professional and managerial colleagues as well as representatives from statutory and non-statutory organisations. This will include Consultant Geriatricians, GPs, community nurses, social workers and other key personnel.
- Undertake clinical supervision and performance reviews for all relevant staff.
- Work at all times within the Professional Code of Practice.
- Improve the quality of patient care through effective clinical leadership.
- Undertake clinical work, training and personal development to maintain and develop clinical and leadership skills.
- Ensure all staff are aware of clinical policies and practices and that these are adhered to.
- To initiate and influence policy development within the service and the Trust.
- To encourage innovation and develop new approaches to patient care.
- To liaise with voluntary and other agencies with respect to support mechanisms available to patients, patient information, patient literature etc.
