Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work psychologically as either a qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist or highly experienced Family or CBTp therapist with those who are at risk of developing symptoms of psychosis under the umbrella of our Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Team in North East Essex, working across the Colchester and Tendring areas. This type of role, known as working with those with an ARMS (At Risk Mental State), focuses on working with individuals assessed to be at risk of developing psychosis. It is an exciting new area of the service, which is currently offering consultation and training to primary and secondary health, education providers and community organisations. This is a new post made available due to increased funding which will enable us to further develop the service to include offering psychological interventions . There are many opportunities for innovation and shaping the future of how the ARMS service evolves.

There are strong links between the EIP (Early Intervention in Psychosis) and ARMS teams across the trust and also with the East of England Regional Network. Psychologists and therapists are supported and encouraged to pursue further training, with people recently trained in CBTp and FIp (including supervision training), EMDR, ACT and CAT.

We also welcome applications from newly qualified Clinical Psychologists, offering Band 7/8a preceptorships.

Main duties of the job

As a specialist mental health approach, ARMS is based on NICE-recommended interventions which include comprehensive assessment and psychological interventions for psychosis or co-existing mental health needs. These activities are often supported with family interventions, recovery coordination, social and education/employment support. Psychological therapists are an integral part of the EIP multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will be required to work across the North Essex locality including the Colchester, Clacton and Harwich areas

To provide specialist therapy consultation clinics and training with the aim of psychosis prevention.

To provide assessments of service users.

Where indicated to utilise complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment of a client's mental health problems.

Supervision of psychological therapists and leading on psychological interventions in the ARMS team.

About us

The ARMS team is under the umbrella of the existing Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Service.

Our EIP teams across the trust provide specialist services for people aged 14 - 65 years old who are experiencing psychosis for the first time. We support people and their families through what can be a difficult and confusing time; helping them to make sense of what is happening, feel more in control, and work towards their goals.

There are further ARMS teams in various stages of development across Essex, with variations in service design and delivery according to local needs.

  • Professional qualification in the form of a Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology or equivalent in CBTp or Family/Systemic Psychotherapy.
  • HCPC Registered.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in written reports, letters and other health correspondence, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Experience of working in adult mental health and with complex and serious mental health problems
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and nonprofessional groups.

Desirable

  • Post accreditation training in additional specialised areas of psychological practice e.g. CBT, CBTp or other.
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists/psychological therapists

Skills /Experience

  • Literate in IT/Computer Skills
  • Good oral communication skills based on fluency on the English language
  • Experience of working as a qualified clinical or counselling psychologist for a minimum of two years.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of frequently highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.

Desirable

  • Demonstrate further specialist training and/or experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours clinical supervision of working as a specialist clinical psychologist or other named therapist over a minimum of 18 months, or an alternative agreed by the Director of Psychological Services.
