Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an innovative and enthusiastic qualified Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to join our exciting, ever-evolving psychological inpatient services in EPUT. This role offers the opportunity to work across both our Mother and Baby Unit (MBU - 0.5 WTE) and our acute inpatient wards (0.5 WTE) at the Linden Centre in Chelmsford. We are a creative team who pride themselves on offering rapid assessments, psychologically-informed formulations and innovative psychological interventions to service users who are in crisis. We aim to understand the impact of trauma and adverse experiences on an individual's presentation and work with our MDT colleagues to ensure purposeful inpatient admissions.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for someone with experience of a range of presenting needs who can formulate complexity and is able to work well within an MDT setting. Experience of in-patient settings and/ or perinatal mental health is desirable but not essential. We would welcome candidates with prior experience of these fields, but are also keen to hear from those who have an interest in inpatient and perinatal mental health and are looking to develop their skills in these areas.

Perinatal Psychology is a flourishing and exciting field to work in and there will be highly specialised trainings and supervisions available to the successful candidates.

As an inpatient psychological service, we place emphasis on providing direct psychological interventions which can be offered individually, in groups or with the wider support system and also on indirect interventions which include staff training, reflective practise, case consultation and staff well-being. Inpatient psychological work often necessitates the use of a creative approach, drawing on a range of models, as well as collaborative working with other members of the MDT and wider system, therefore an ability to work integratively and creatively is welcomed. The role also includes supervision of Trainee Clinical/Counselling Psychologists, Clinical Associates in Psychology (CAPs) and Assistant Psychologists. You will join an expanding team of psychological therapists working in inpatient settings, supervised by an experienced inpatient Lead Psychologist/ Psychological Practitioner.

Perinatal mental health Psychology aims to understand and support maternal mental health and wellbeing and this ethos will be fundamental to the work supporting the Mother and Baby Unit (MBU). Pregnancy and the transition to parenthood are recognised as a time when mental health difficulties and relationship stress can occur and intensify. Experience of preexisting trauma as well as trauma during the perinatal period can have a significant impact on the experience of becoming a mother. Psychological interventions which are specific, effective, and valued by women can support them with such difficulties; reducing distress and health care costs, whilst increasing physical and psychological wellbeing. The BPS Briefing Paper on Perinatal Psychology Service provision is a good source of information for those new to this area of work.

Working with mothers and infants at a time of acute difficulty can be hugely rewarding and many mothers will seek psychological support to understand the significant shift in their journey to becoming a parent. The role will provide diverse working relationships with mothers, their infants, their families as well as the wider perinatal system including the Community Perinatal Mental Health Service, Health Visiting and Midwifery.   • Doctorate in Clinical/Counselling Psychology/ or equivalent qualification
  • HCPC Registered
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
