Job summary

You will be responsible for the Occupational therapy assessment and treatments of patients under your care. The unit has both low secure and medium secure wards with patients' recovery ranging from acute to pre-discharge needs.

Main duties of the job

The post holder works under the overall supervision of the Head Occupational Therapist for Secure Services. Active participation will be required in the training and education of learners allocated to the Secure Services, and will also encourage collaborative working between the ward MDTs and community services.

Successful candidates must obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Criminal Records Disclosure Certificate and hold full registration with the HCPC.

We are looking for a highly committed clinical Occupational Therapist who is flexible, proactive, and enthusiastic with a special interest in Secure Services.

For this post you need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to work proactively in a multidisciplinary team environment. You will be expected to support the Occupational Therapy Team with various recovery based therapies both on the ward and off the ward.

The Occupational Therapy team at Brockfield House consists of qualified OTs, activity coordinators with fitness level 3 training, employment and education coordinator. There is a good balance between mental health therapies and physical health interventions.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To assess patients admitted to the Secure Service wards.

2. To utilise specialist assessments when presented with complex cases.

3. To make decisions on the level of treatment intervention required.

4. To undertake treatment planning, communicating and negotiating treatment plans and clinical reasoning for intervention with patients and their carers.

5. To communicate agreed treatment/care plans to multi-disciplinary team colleagues and partnership agencies and liaise with them at formal and informal meetings.

6. To undertake manual handling assessments ensuring other professionals and carers are aware of manual handling needs.

7. To work in collaboration with others to modify aspects of the environment in order to empower patients and facilitate optimal functional performance.

8. To liaise with Social Services and Housing Organisations concerning provision of equipment and home adaptations.

9. To manage a complex caseload.

10. To apply a variety of treatment modalities to meet the needs of patients in individual or group format, utilising clinical reasoning processes to determine the most appropriate setting for intervention, e.g. home visits.

11. To make clinically informed decisions in order to delegate aspects of patient care to assistants, junior staff, students, carers and statutory or non-statutory bodies.

12. To regularly review patients progress in order to evaluate and interpret effectiveness of treatment plans, and amend treatment or discharge patients accordingly.

13. To ensure that treatment offered is based on the best available evidence for effectiveness in the specialist area where it is applied.

14. To develop and initiate interventions based on the integration of theoretical knowledge in order to meet unique patient needs.

15. To keep up to date clinical records in line with professional standards and local record keeping policies.

16. To provide written and verbal reports as required at any stage in the treatment process in line with Occupational Therapy Clinical Governance Standards.
