Job summary

Within the Stroke Psychology Service and the Breathlessness Psychology Service the post holder will be responsible for supporting the psychologists within the service with day to day delivery, this may include assessment and manualised treatment for clients, audit and data management, supporting service development projects, and co-facilitating groups.

This will be under the direction and supervision of a qualified Clinical Psychologist who will retain clinical responsibility for clinical work carried out, provided that the clinical work is within the care plan specified.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team within both services in both hospital and community setting in South East Essex (MSE) Foundation Trust. One hour of supervision will be provided with a qualified Clinical Psychologist for every 5 days worked. This will be split pro-rata according to the time spent within each service. Qualifications

Essential

  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology. Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems.
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to physical and mental healthcare contexts.

Desirable

  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of stroke survivors and their support networks
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties for people who experience physical health conditions which can result in the experience of breathlessness
  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice, neuropsychology and/or research design and analysis
  • Knowledge of current DOH policies with regards to mental health.

Skills

Essential

  • Work with people with mental and physical health problems and/or long term conditions.
  • High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Awareness and ability to make decisions that will ensure their own safety and that of others; lone working in the community.
  • Experience using microcomputers for databases or data analysis, especially SPSS for windows & Excel.
  • An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines

  • Experience of working with people who have health conditions such as COPD, Heart Failure, etc., or who have experienced a Stroke and their family members or carers.
