Job summary
We are excited to be offering an opportunity for a Senior Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to join adult community psychological services as a Personality Disorder Lead. This is a part time post (0.5 WTE) at band 8A but we can be flexible and consider additional hours from other available vacancies within the service to make the post a full time one. We will also welcome newly qualified applicants who can be initially appointed at a band 7 with preceptorship to 8A in due course. The post is permanent and if taken up full time it will be split between the Gables (Braintree), and the C&E (Chelmsford).
If you currently are a second year trainee clinical psychologist with the University of Essex or the University of Hertfordshire and you would like to apply for a third year placement with us, you can also apply for this post. If successful, the post will be offered to you upon qualification without any need to reapply.
This post comes with many CPD opportunities: we are currently training staff in EMDR, MBT, DBT, Schema Therapy and CBT for PD through the Health Education England scheme or Trust funding. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to take up further training in a specialist evidence-based model.
Main duties of the job
- To provide specialist psychological assessments of service users, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care. The post-holder will also be responsible for the safe use of any equipment used during assessments (e.g. test batteries).
- To formulate and implement plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of a client's mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client's problems, employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range settings.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of highly specialised psychological interventions for people with mental health needs; including individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients accepted by the service.

We work alongside and jointly with a variety of experienced professionals from different backgrounds, including community mental health nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, support workers, employment specialists and peer support workers. Adult community psychology and psychotherapy provide a variety of interventions to community teams, including DBT/STEPPS, CAT, CBT-p, EMDR, systemic family therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy and art psychotherapy. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to multi-disciplinary treatment planning, form the premises of respectful and collegial relationships with members of various disciplines and to rise to the challenges posed by working in large teams and across teams.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within supportive MDTs and highly experienced clinical/counselling psychologists and psychotherapists. We are looking for someone competent and experienced in delivering psychological assessments and interventions within the context of the NHS. Experience of offering consultations and developing clinical formulations that meet the needs of clients with personality disorders and other complex presentations is essential. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience with clients who experience severe emotional disturbance, often with a history of trauma and multiple morbidities.
The post holder will have the opportunity to offer and supervise placements for trainee clinical psychologists.
The post-holder will have a key role in multi-disciplinary treatment planning and will need to be skilled in managing complex team dynamics. There will be many opportunities to contribute to research, audit and service evaluation.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have completed doctoral level training (or its equivalent) in Clinical or Counselling Psychology and/ or have additional training to include models of clinical psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the HCPC. Psychologists with experience of working with personality disorders and psychoses are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those who can evidence a strong background in working with complex and challenging cases. Eligibility for BPS Chartered Status is desirable and registration with the Health Care Professions Council is essential.
