HIGHLY SPECIALISED MUSCULOSKELETAL PHYSIOTHERAPIST POST
BAND 7
The opportunity has arisen within The EPUT NHS Trust Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Team for a Highly Specialised Clinical Band 7.
The successful applicant will provide clinical leadership as part of the Band 7 Team and in conjunction with the Advanced Practice Team for services provided by MSK Physiotherapy.
This is an exciting time of change in musculoskeletal services within West Essex and the post holder will work closely with the Musculoskeletal Manager, the other Physiotherapy Team Leaders as well as other colleagues within the wider musculoskeletal service in order to remodel and integrate services in line with commissioner's requirements.
EPUT was part of the NHS England First Contact Practitioner (FCP) national pilot, with plans to develop this service further. This is likely to offer further clinical opportunities.
In addition to developing managerial skills the post holder will be able to continue to develop their clinical skills through working with Advanced Practitioners and internal training programmes as well as support with external courses.
Flexible working will be considered but days of working must include a Friday.

Main duties of the job
Role Summary
- On a daily basis to provide skilled Team Leadership in planning and delivering the high standards of physical therapy assessment, management, treatment and advice to musculoskeletal outpatients.
- To help manage the team of staff within that department, including standards of practice and competence.
- To take a major role in the advanced assessment and management of patients within this specialty who may have a complex presentation and / or a multi-pathology presentation, determining best delivery of care, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
- To work as an autonomous professional according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) "Rules of Professional Conduct" and "Standards of Physiotherapy", and the Health and Care Professions Council's (HCPC) regulations or appropriate regulating body.
- To undertake reviews / audits of the outpatient Physiotherapy service in order to evaluate quality, efficiency and outcomes with a view to implementing change of practice, to ensure that a high standard of clinical practice and patient care is maintained
- To supervise, teach and appraise physiotherapists / non-qualified physiotherapy staff and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) staff in physical therapeutic care of patients within this specialty.

Job responsibilities
- To be responsible for the provision of a high standard of physiotherapy practice and patient management for musculoskeletal outpatients supporting other staff to do the same.
- To be highly competent in assessing a wide range of conditions experienced by patients within this specialty based on advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, often in situations where conflicting evidence is present.
- To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex presentations, to recommend the best course of intervention and to develop comprehensive discharge plans.
- To formulate, evaluate and reassess individualised physical therapy management and / or treatment plans using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options, for example manual physical therapy techniques, in order to formulate a specialised programme of care.
- To demonstrate the physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions, including manual physiotherapy techniques, therapeutic handling and the use of specialist equipment e.g. electrotherapy.
- To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory skills for the assessment and manual treatment of patients.
- To be responsible for the checking and/or teaching competency to more junior and non-qualified staff in using equipment e.g. electrical appliances and gym equipment.
- To lead within the department to ensure a high standard of clinical practice and patient care is maintained and to ensure that other physical therapists in the team do the same through ongoing competency assessment and evaluation of treatment outcomes using evidence based practice and professional guidelines.
- To ensure that the musculoskeletal team follows and implements clinical policies and service development changes relating to the provision of high standards of clinical practice
- To work, as appropriate, with GPs and Consultants in the provision of a high standard of care to patients within the specialty, who may be presenting as complex cases.
- To supervise, educate and train less experienced staff for example junior physical therapists and assistants, to ensure provision of a high standard of patient care for all patients within the specialty.
- To participate in the supervision and education of undergraduate physiotherapy students ensuring that all university set standards and procedures are maintained for the duration of the placement.
- To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, caregivers and other professionals to promote understanding of the aims of physical therapy to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
- To accept clinical responsibility for the musculoskeletal outpatient caseload and be responsible for own care plans of patients for the specialty.
- To represent EPUT in the provision of expert physiotherapeutic knowledge of issues relating to the specialty as requested
- To use specialist knowledge to refer to other agencies as appropriate, e.g. community Physiotherapy, patient appliances, GP etc.
