Job summary

Are you an interested in SaLT in the world of forensic mental health? We are a dynamic forensic SaLT team, looking for someone who can bring a curiosity and openness to learn in a culturally sensitive work environment.

East London Foundation Trust is looking for a HCPC registered Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT), to join the Forensic low Secure Inpatient Team for Adults with Learning Disabilities. Joining an MDT working with individuals with mild and moderate learning disabilities, some of whom are Autistic. An openness to challenge traditional ideas about models of communication and engage in innovative practice are essential for this role!

The role will provide the right candidate with the excellent CPD and supervision structures, with space to develop ones own therapeutic model. Dysphagia experience is welcomed but not essential.

Main duties of the job

To provide a speech and language therapy service inpatient forensics for a caseload of adults with mental health diagnoses, Learning Disabilities and a forensic background with disorders of communication and swallowing, with highly competent support and supervision.

Job responsibilities

1. To take responsibility, with support and supervision, for a personal clinical caseload working closely with colleagues in Forensic mental health, healthcare services and other related teams, reporting directly to SLT Lead for LD.

2. To plan, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for adults with disorders of communication and swallowing, working as part of the SLT team on forensic wards.

3. Following a period of training and supervised practice to take on a caseload of patients with swallowing disorders, including investigation of safe consistencies to eat and drink, therapeutic techniques and compensatory strategies to allow safe oral intake and minimise risk to the client.

4. To provide a service that takes account of the needs of clients from ethnic and linguistic minority groups, working alongside interpreters in order to ensure access to an equitable service for all.

5. To act as a resource in advocating for patients with complex communication difficulties to enable them to understand, contribute and make informed decisions about aspects of their treatment.

6. To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team and make referrals to other professionals as required.

7. To participate in the development and delivery of training (formal and informal) with and without support of SLT colleagues (e.g. training on awareness and understanding of the role of speech and language therapists) to visitors, students and volunteers, other health professionals, carers, clients and the general public.

8. To represent SLT within a designated team, developing links with relevant teams in Health and Social Services.

9. To work jointly with other professionals to deliver therapy programmes.

10. To participate in SLT service development initiatives.
