This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well established mental health liaison team in an CQC rated Outstanding Trust.
The post is within well-developed multidisciplinary teams working in the vibrant borough of Tower Hamlets. There are opportunities to work flexibly and good support from a collegiate consultant body within the Directorate.
This post is a 0.8wte substantive consultant post within the Older Adult Mental Health Liaison Psychiatry service based at The Royal London Hospital (RLH). The service base is very central to the borough with good bus and Tube connections.The post holder will work between the main older adult liaison team and providing input to clinical services at Barts and the Royal London. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel within the Tower Hamlets Adult Mental Health Directorate. The Department of Psychological Medicine (DOPM) is composed of the adult liaison and older adult liaison service (Emergency Department and wards) as well as separate sub-specialist services in renal, gastroenterology, diabetes & HIV mental health.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will provide consultant clinical leadership to the service and will assume consultant psychiatrist responsibility for patients being looked after by the Older Adult MHLT. This includes assuming Responsible Clinician status for detained patients. They will participate, directly and indirectly, in the assessment of patients referred to the service and in drawing up care plans which will address the patients' psychiatric, physical and social needs. Good communication will be undertaken with the patient's GP. When a review of the care plan is indicated, the carer and any other professionals involved will participate in reviews.
The post-holder will forge good working relationships with other psychiatrists in the service in order to encourage appropriate referrals to the service and to assure a cooperative approach to the care of patients.
The Mental Health Liaison Team (older adults) usually has an inpatient caseload of between 15-25 patients at any one time. We receive approximately 2-5 new referrals per day which are shared amongst the team. The team lso sees older adults presenting to the emergency department, after initial assessment by the psychiatric liaison nurses there. In total the emergency department receives around 350 mental health referrals per month.

The Trust is committed to continuous learning and has invested heavily on Quality Improvement in partnership with the internationally renowned organisation, IHI. Last year the inpatient and community services along with the crisis services were reviewed by CQC as a part of a comprehensive visit and the trust was only largely mental health provider to have obtained overall outstanding rating. The Tower Hamlets Directorate has been a high performing directorate with one of the highest staff engagements in recent national survey.

- Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
- Fully registered with the General Medical Council
- Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT).
- Membership of the Royal College Of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with RCPsych Guidelines)
- With or eligible for Approved Clinician status (MHA, 2007)
