Eating Disorders Clinical Support Worker

Job summary

The Clinical Support Worker will provide evidence based intensive intervention to people with an Eating Disorder and their families/carers. The main role is in partnership with people with an ED, families and carers to assess, plan and implement evidence based psychoeducational interventions to promote recovery from eating disorders with a key focus being around prevention of Specialist Eating Disorder Unit (SEDU) admissions, reducing duration of admissions and successful discharges.

Working under the supervision of qualified staff, the post holder will provide invivo meal support in service users' homes, virtually and in community settings across Bedfordshire and Luton with coaching and support for emotion regulation, body image, communication, motivation, goal setting and other areas related to this client group.

A key secondary role is in liaison and joint working with other professionals, especially members of the Community Eating Disorder Service (CEDS), GPs, SEDUs and community mental health teams to maintain effective continuity of care and to widen awareness of the complexities involved in the management and treatment of eating disorders.

The post holder will work closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team of the CEDS and further specific duties will be determined on the basis of skills and experience and operational service requirements, and may vary occasionally as service needs/priorities change.

Main duties of the job

  • To work under the supervision of qualified staff to deliver evidence based psychoeducational interventions, mostly on a one-to-one basis but also group basis to promote recovery from eating disorders
  • to provide in vivo meal support in service users' homes, virtually and in community settings across Bedfordshire and Luton with coaching and support in ways to de-escalate distress associated with eating, plus guidance and support around managing food avoidance and compensatory behaviours.
  • to provide support to carers
  • to work collaboratively in the spirit of co-production with service users, families/carers, colleagues and partners to develop and improve services in line with national policy and evidence-based care, meeting the needs of people with an eating disorder in Bedfordshire and Luton.

  • NVQ level 3 in health and social care or a MH Certificate of equivalent qualification.
  • Previous work with people with mental health or social care needs in an acute or community setting
  • Experience of working autonomously under the supervision of senior staff

  • High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Skills in engaging positively with a wide range of people with respect for diversity and encouraging inclusion.
  • Ability to work independently, within agreed time frames, and using supervision appropriately within limits of competence.
