Job summary

We are seeking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our excellent MDT on Ash Ward a 19 bed male acute ward, in Leagrave near Luton, south Bedfordshire. The post holder will provide consultant clinical leadership for the ward, and will be well supported by an SAS doctor and 2 junior doctors alongside, an excellent and well-functioning MDT including Matron, Ward Manager, excellent nursing team with fulltime support from OT and Psychology.

Oakley Court encompasses Ash ward and Willow Ward an 11 bed acute ward- enabling easy cross cover arrangements to be made between wards when the need arises.

Whilst Oakley Court is a stand-alone unit, The Luton & Dunstable Hospital, and the inpatient wards of the Luton Centre for Mental health are close at hand being only 10 minute journey by car.

The ward has a turnover of approximately 25 patients per month, with an average length of stay of approximately 24 days. The patient caseload of Ash ward is predominantly made up of Psychotic Disorders, Mood disorder and Personality disorders.

Main duties of the job

he post-holder will:

  • Provide consultant leadership to the multidisciplinary ward team
  • Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of the mental and physical health for 11 acutely ill adult female inpatients
  • Carry out all Responsible Clinician's duties for those patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, maintaining all care planning in line with legal requirements. These duties will include; assessing patients under the Mental Health Act, capacity assessments, consent to treatment, tribunal report writing, attending Mental Health Act Review Tribunals and Managers' Hearings, granting Sec 17 leave, revoking CTOs, recommending CTOs, etc.
  • Assume clinical responsibility for adult patients with mental illness admitted acutely from community services (All admissions will be gate- kept by the Crisis Resolution/Home Treatment team)
  • Undertake all work in the context of the recovery approach, which is emphasised across the Trust, placing the service user at the centre of care planning and decision making
  • Attend the ward on a daily basis to review patients, enable facilitation of the care program approach and involve carers when appropriate at each stage of the inpatient stay.
