The Adult Speech & Language Therapy Service in BCHS, ELFT has an exciting opportunity for a speech & language therapy apprentice to join our innovative and supportive team based at Bedford Hospital and in the community. Speech & Language Therapy in ELFT is a growing profession. The Speech & Language Therapy Apprenticeship programme is a new fully funded route towards qualification as a HCPC registered Speech & Language Therapist. The degree will be delivered by Sheffield University (remote).
The post is 4 year fixed term.
What's involved?
- The apprenticeship is a four-year programme of work based learning that is directly linked to the apprenticeship standard.
- The apprenticeship has a mandatory 40% off-the-job learning. 60% will be carried out working within BCHS, ELFT speech & language therapy service developing skills in assessing and treating adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties.
- The University Honours degree course will be fully remote.
- The course will involve 525 hours clinical placement (in line with RCSLT guidelines) across both adult and paediatric settings.
- Start date September 2024 with interviews to be held in two stages:
Interview 1 - Bedfordshire Health Community Services, ELFT. In Person. March 2024
If successful at interview 1 you will progress to the University interview.
Interview 2 - Jointly with ELFT and Sheffield University.
To be held remotely May - June 2024

Eligibility
- You will have some experience of adults with communication difficulties and be able to demonstrate how you will be able to use the experiences you are bringing to become a speech & language therapist
In addition, you must be able to meet one of the following criteria:
- A Levels: ABB
- BTEC Extended Diploma: DDD in a healthcare or science subject
- Access to HE Diploma: Award of Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject, with 45 credits at Level 3, including 36 at Distinction and 9 at Merit
- Other, equivalent Level 3 qualifications can be accepted.
- Three GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English Language. Level 2 equivalent qualifications (eg, Functional Skills) are also accepted but must have been achieved at the point of enrolment
- A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure check (or EU equivalent)
- A satisfactory occupational health screening report
- Right of abode in the UK meeting University admission
Salary will be Annexe 21 of a band 5 - Starting salary 60% of top of Band 5, currently £20,749 (subject to change with 2024/25 pay rates)

The Adult Speech and Language Therapy team within Bedfordshire Community Health Services (BCHS), ELFT delivers a service to both the acute hospital and community outpatients and domiciliary. The service sees acquired speech, language, swallowing, voice and fluency difficulties resulting from a wide range of causes.
- To work within the Adult Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) Service in a developmental role.
- To provide SLT care (assessment, intervention, public health advice) to individuals referred with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties in a range of environments and as part of the multidisciplinary team
- To take on work of ever increasing responsibility and complexity according to increasing range and depth of competence against the Speech and Language Therapy Degree Apprenticeship Standard.
- To complete the Higher Education Institute (HEI) apprenticeship programme (Sheffield University) within the agreed timeframe supported by extensive workplace learning and practice
- To qualify as a Speech & Language Therapist and be eligible for Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
Human Resources
1. To participate in student placements as appropriate
2. To explain the role of Speech & Language Therapists to visitors, students, volunteers and other professionals e.g. at careers events.
3. To assist in the support of students from other professional groups as appropriate
4. With support to provide advice to non-specialists and other specialists/ professionals
5. With support to deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible
Performance and Quality
1. To be aware of, adhere to and implement service and team plans and policies where needed under supervision, these include:
2. Maintaining up to date and accurate case notes on System One in line with RCSLT and HCPC professional standards and local Trusts policies.
3. Providing activity data accurately and regularly, ensuring the provision of such information promptly within Trust guidelines.
4. To share information with others, observing data protection guidelines

1. To monitor stock levels in own service area and request new equipment as appropriate
2. Does not hold budgetary responsibility but is aware of the need to plan non- pay expenditure.
