London Borough of Newham's new Autism Diagnostic Service

An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for a Senior Practitioner to help develop and be part of the leadership team in the London borough of Newham's new (adult) Autism Diagnostic Service. The service is hosted within East London Foundation NHS Trust and will work closely with a wide range of stakeholders and offers an exciting opportunity to help shape our boroughs autism services.

The post holder will have extensive knowledge and diagnostic clinical skills in the area of autism and be an experienced practitioner. We are seeking interest from clinician's from a range of professionally registered backgrounds (Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Speech & Language Therapy), educated to degree level or with equivalent demonstrable experience.

The service will provide specialist autism diagnostic assessments (pre-screening questionnaires, interviews, ADOS-2 and other standardised diagnostic tests as required), post diagnostic consultancy and expertise to other teams/services across the borough.

This post is 1.0WTE. However, flexible part time working will be considered for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support service users in relation to understanding their condition and providing suggestions for ways to minimise distress and reduce difficulties. This will be within the clinical scope of the post holder and therefore may include interventions around sensory integration, activity engagement, communication strategies and psychoeducation, focusing on social inclusion, health promotion and relapse prevention.

To participate in the diagnostic process from beginning to end, to deliver signposting and some post-diagnostic support. Also support to Operational Lead in day-to-day running of service.

This is a highly specialised role within Newham Autism Diagnostic Service. The service is a small expanding service that provides assessment and limited post-diagnostic interventions to adults with a diagnosis of Autism who live in Newham.

  • To contribute to entire diagnostic process from screening, through assessment and MDT discussion to outcome appointment and onward referral.
  • To help plan, organise and facilitate Peer Support Groups and Post-Diagnostic Workshops.
  • To provide specialist advisory, training, consultation and liaison to support other ELFT staff and Primary Care Colleagues.
  • To support the role of the Operational Lead, including offering management cover where appropriate.
  • To directly contribute to a positive working environment within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • The post holder will require a high degree of professional autonomy and self-management, and will be required to account for their professional practice through appraisal, audit and service evaluation.
  • Act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advance knowledge and skills including the integration of research evidence into practice with expert clinical reasoning and decision making.
