Job summary

We are looking for skilled and highly motivated pharmacy technician to join the clinical pharmacy team in Luton & Bedford

The position will be based at Luton Mental health with rotation between mental health specialty wards.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work in as part of a dedicated ward pharmacy and community Mental Health teams, with the support of senior colleagues. This is an excellent prospect for pharmacy technicians that want to focus on clinical patient care working in a multidisciplinary team.

You should have aBTEC / NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent and be registered on the UK GPHC professional registration.

You will need to have good communication and time management skills. As a medicines management pharmacy technician you will have the opportunity to work in a wide range of mental health services including acute adult inpatients, older adults, home treatment teams, community mental health teams, inpatient rehabilitation, psychiatric intensive care, eating disorders and early intervention services.

Main duties of the job

  1. Co-ordinates and maintains medication supply to wards and teams.
  2. Assess patients' individual pharmaceutical care needs within 72 hours of identification
  3. Initiates medicines reconciliation for newly admitted patients.
  4. Is a key member of the Multidisciplinary Team, participating in weekly team meetings in order to maximise patients potential for independent medicines management
  5. To participate in dispensary duties.
  6. To have and maintain accredited MOPTs and/or Accredited checking technician training (ACT)
  7. To prepare discharge medication (TTAs) and leave medication in a timely and efficient manner.
  8. To communicate discharge information to Community Pharmacies and GPs.
  9. To support the pharmacists in attaining CQUIN and KPI targets
  10. Ensures all documentation in regard to Medications Optimisation on the unit is completed accurately
  11. To participate in dispensary duties where applicable
  12. To communicate discharge information to patients, Community Pharmacies and GPs
  13. To lead on clozapine blood test reviews and ordering
  14. To actively be involved in Quality Improvement projects and clinical audit
  15. To organize the clinical workload and staffing levels so the service is run as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.
  16. To be responsible for maintaining accurate stock control and to oversee the maintenance and destruction of controlled drugs on wards and in the dispensary.

  • Completion of a GPhC approved integrated competency and knowledgebased qualification/course (i.e. BTEC/ City & Guilds/NVQ3 pharmacy or equivalent)
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC
  • Nationally accredited with a medicine's optimisation qualification
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice

Desirable

  • Completed final accuracy checking training as part of the pharmacy technician qualification (post-2020) OR Nationally accredited with a final accuracy checking qualification (pre-2020)

Experience

Essential

  • Hospital pharmacy post qualification experience
  • Success in a previous post requiring completion of work to deadlines
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Drug history taking
  • Ward based clinical work

Desirable

  • Experience in tutoring and training
