Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist who would like to develop their skills in forensic mental health. The role sits within the low secure Learning Disability ward within the forensic directorate. It is a 15 bedded ward for men with LD and who may be Autistic. There are excellent CPD opportunities and clinical supervision arrangements within this role. And the chance to work with a highly experienced and skilled MDT.

The Speech and Language Therapy team has grown significantly in recent years, with 7 team members working across inpatient and community forensic teams. There is opportunity to develop dysphagia skills, however, the primary focus is communication. A band 5-6 development post will be considered for the right candidate.

A strengths-based approach will underpin work with service users and carers so that their individual assets can be optimised and positive life choices and opportunities can be enabled in partnership with individuals and the services around them.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the assessment, differential diagnosis, development and implementation of specialist treatment plans for a caseload of adults with learning disabilities in a forensic setting.

To continually develop and evaluate clinical practices and achieve goals set for personal and professional development.

To identify, plan, deliver and evaluate specialist training.

To provide specialist clinical communication support to other members of the clinical team, students and volunteers.

To work with wider clinical team to plan and facilitate provision of therapeutic groups on the ward.

To be involved in clinical governance / audit projects within the local service.

To independently manage and prioritise a specialist caseload of adults with learning disabilities and communication and / or dysphagia difficulties.

To maintain appropriate records in line with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists guidelines.
