Job summary

The Trust is seeking a consultant psychiatrist to join the well established Community Recovery Team in North Newham. The post-holder will manage the care of individuals with severe and enduring mental health problems working across community and inpatient settings, retaining consultant responsibility across the care pathway in an integrated service - consequently this is a rare opportunity to work in a post that straddles both inpatients and the community.

Community services in Newham have recently received substantial investment as part of NHS England's community transformation, part of the NHS 10 year plan.

Main duties of the job

To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust's personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.

To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are European Working Time Directive compliant.

To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
  • Higher training in approved training posts for minimum of 3 years and / or previous consultant training.
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Approval under Section 12(2) of Mental Health Act 1983 and Approved Clinician status

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of clinical work in General Adult Psychiatry at ST4-6 or Consultant level within the last 3 years
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
  • Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
  • Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry
  • Experience of working on an inpatient ward

  • Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
  • Knowledge & experience of recovery-informed service delivery and working with patients as experts by experience
