Job summary
Homerton Psychological Medicine (HPM) provides mental health support, assessment and treatment for patients presenting to the Homerton University Hospital (HUH). This team sits within the City and Hackney Crisis Pathway and works closely with Home Treatment team.
The post holder will be responsible for providing psychological interventions directly and within multi-disciplinary teams to address the needs of patients with physical and mental health conditions, including substance misuse, dementia/delirium and medically unexplained symptoms.
Teaching and consultation to hospital based multi-disciplinary teams and as well as mental health professionals within the Homerton Psychological Medicine service will be an important part of the role as will be the supervision of doctoral trainees, psychology assistants and associates.
The Crisis Pathway is currently undergoing a transformation and is looking to recruit a Clinical Psychologist who will be able to support changes that will enhance service user experience.
Main duties of the job
Consistent findings show that 28% of UK general hospital adult inpatients have significant mental illness, with a further 40% having symptoms of anxiety and/or depression that includes adjustment disorders. Additionally, there is an overlap with alcohol misuse / alcoholism found on 20% of these inpatients. Rates of psychiatric morbidity are even higher in older adults (>65 years' old) when we consider the in-hospital prevalence of dementia (35%) and mild cognitive impairment (20%) in these older patients. Adding to the personal distress untreated mental ill health inflicts on these patients, this group has higher mortality (including but not exclusively suicide), and major economic consequences for general hospitals: increased lengths of stay, increased readmission rates and higher ED use following discharge Homerton Psychological Medicine (HPM) provides mental health support, assessment and treatment for patients presenting to the Homerton University Hospital (HUH). It provides a 24/7 service and has recently secured funding to provide a 'CORE 24' service which has enabled the team to employ a clinical psychologist.
