Job summary
A new role has been created at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust for a Pastoral Care Lead Band 6. The role will focus on recruitment, retention and the provision of pastoral care for nursing staff. The applicant will be involved in supporting new starters from their interview through until they start working at the Trust. During this time they will work with the individuals, their future colleagues and PEFs (if they are newly qualified) to ensure that each new starter experiences a positive journey in joining the Trust. The individual must be compassionate, caring , supportive and be able to demonstrate strong leadership to all new starters.
Secondment opportunities is also welcome.
Main duties of the job
- To hold day to day responsibility for liaising & engaging with the Education Team within a defined area in response to identified need and strategic priorities.
- Creating an effective working relationship with the education service to ensure staff are well supported and have access to the appropriate resources and training.
- To effectively manage & support individuals in a safe learning & working environment.
- To provide leadership, guidance & role modelling for newly recruited registered and non-registered clinical nursing staff.
- To manage the processes for assessing and performance of professional development for all registered and non-registered clinical nursing staff.
- The provision of pastoral care in collaboration with the Matron for Workforce & Recruitment and Retention Administrator.
- Creating a working relationship with potential employees from interview stage, through the recruitment process to starting at the Trust.
- Supporting new starters during the transition from learner to practitioner.
- Working in line with the People Promise to provide a supportive work life balance.
- Provide active clinical guidance, i.e. hands on care.
- To work with service leads in developing workforce plans within the Trust & support divisions in response to staff feedback to retain staff and harbour positive culture and improve staff wellbeing.

Co-ordination of promotional campaigns for recruitment events. Managing the retention pathway, Grow & Retain our Workforce (GROW), which provides opportunities for registered nurses (RNs) to gain experience working in a different clinical environment. Work effectively with Professional Nurse Advocates (PNAs) in supporting staff. Commence open communication channels & provide support throughout the recruitment process for new starters. Create dialogue with new starter's new line manager & matron & arrange Meet the Team visits for the new starter . Liaise with the Professional Education Facilitators (PEFs) & Preceptorship Team. Co-ordinate Keeping in Touch sessions for newly qualified nurses who have yet to start at the Trust who may want the opportunity to complete competency assessments in clinical skills. Organise the allocation of each new starter with a Buddy to working alongside them throughout their induction. Attend university careers events, which may occasionally be at the weekend, promoting the Trust as an employer of choice. Visit colleges and schools, actively promoting working for the NHS and the role of a career in nursing. Provide pastoral support for the newly qualified with their transition from learner to active practitioner. Support the career development of the internationally educated nurses supporting the EDI strategy. Work alongside the education team, support the internationally educated nurses currently practicing as HCAs to complete their OSCE to support their transition to RNs. Identify a Mentor to meet the individual on a regular basis to provide support and reassurance. In the absence of the Workforce Matron the post holder will step up and fulfil the duties where required. Assist the Workforce Matron in supporting and contributing to agreed developments within the Division. Ensure you are a visible leader onsite and in the community settings.
