Job summary

The post holder will be an experienced Midwife who is dynamic, accessible and a responsive leader. Who is able to provide effective compassionate leadership skills, clinical expertise and advice to the Maternity team they will manage. They will be expected to ensure the provision of a high quality service to the women/person and their families in line with best practice, local, regional and national guidance. To Carry out responsibility and accountability on a shift basis, both managerially and professionally for the management of the Delivery suite, including the effective development and supervision of staff with regard to skill mix and dependency of care. Toe encourage and support midwives to engage philosophy and principles of the midwifery agenda thus promoting normal birth. Post holder will be expected to contribute to setting standards, audit, research, infection control and risk management.

Main duties of the job

Provide effective leadership, providing professional standards. Be visible and accessible in the clinical area for service users, relatives, and staff. Carry responsibility and accountability on a shift basis, both managerially and professionally. Carry out the duties of a Midwife as directed by the NMC Code of Professional Practice and Code of Professional Conduct & within trust guidance. Maintain high quality professional standard, positive culture, safe and high quality care towards all service users and staff, ensuring the philosophy of individualised and personalised care is upheld and an effective working environment is maintained.Lead by example,act as a positive role model to staff taking responsibility for own professional development.To confidently escalate in a timely manner concerns about patient safety,quality and experience, offering solutions and evidence-based recommendations. To contribute to a culture that recognises and works in partnership with service users and their families, involving them in all decisions.To ensure that national, regional and local policy and guidance are delivered and maintained. Foster a culture which encourages staff to challenge and report substandard practice. Contribute to the Ward accreditation programme.Contribute to and participate in audit. Awareness and participation in trust policies on safeguarding which will include regular updating with regard to detection and reporting of child protection incidents.

Act as shift leader for Delivery Suite.

Be responsible for leading planning, implementing and evaluating care of birthing people and babies.

Ensure effective use of resources and provisions of safe staffing levels for service provision.

Be involved in business planning where appropriate

Act in a supervisory, supportive and advisory capacity for all staff.

Support workforce planning through recruitment and retention of staff.

Participate in and be responsible for staff development including induction programmes for new staff and supervision of Student Midwives and other learners.

Ensure a dynamic learning environment for students, which allows for effective assessment/achievement of learning objectives.

Support the promotion of the Professional Midwifery Advocate role.

Identify and facilitate the training needs of all staff within the ward, contributing to teaching activities where appropriate.

Support staff through annual appraisal review.

Monitor and comply with the attendance management policy.

Promotes and maintains good working relationships with all grades of staff and the multi-disciplinary maternity team through effective communication.

Participates in striving to achieve the Divisions annual objectives.

Helps in the maintenance of a safe working environment and escalates identified problems through the robust escalation process.

Actively participates in Ward Team meetings.

Ensures that all Trust and Divisional policies are adhered to.

Maintains confidentiality at all times.

Participates in orientation/induction/preceptorship of new staff.

Take responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance, including identifying own development needs and maintain own portfolio in accordance with revalidation requirements and mandatory and role specific requirements.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and promote safeguarding by implementing the Trusts policies and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.
