Communications

Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious, or sensitive, is undertaken responsively and inclusively, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward.

Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted, and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.

Patient Care

The post-holders principal clinical responsibility is to assist in the investigation and treatment of in-patients admitted to the service.

The clinical fellow will be expected to present cases and discuss the differential diagnosis and management.

The post-holders will be taught how to carry out appropriate practical skills and perform these on patients, under direct supervision.

The post-holder is required to have good time-management skills, and demonstrate an ability to prioritise tasks; including delegation where appropriate.

The clinical fellow has a duty towards the Trust property, such as reporting equipment in need of repair.

The clinical fellow has an obligation to ensure appropriate, effective, and productive use of their time.

All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure. You must never undertake any duties that are outside your area of skill or knowledge level. If you are unsure you must seek clarification from a more senior member of staff.

The post holder will be expected to assume responsibility (under the supervision of a Consultant) for and present a specific quality improvement/audit topic.

Employees are required to ensure they are aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures relating to Health & Safety (whether statutory or Trust), and assist in ensuring the compliance of other staff.

All staff members are required to undertake the Trusts Corporate Induction. They are also expected to have a local induction to their place of work, which will be undertaken by their line manager or nominated person.

The clinical fellow will be allocated an educational supervisor who will meet to monitor progress at regular intervals. Supervision is based on competencies assessments. The post-holder will also be offered the opportunity to access a mentor within the Trust, where possible, to support personal development.

The fellow is expected to:

- Attend available and appropriate training sessions organised by the Postgraduate Department.

- Study for postgraduate examinations (unless these have already been obtained)

- Attend postgraduate activities - many previous clinical fellows have successfully obtained postgraduate qualifications either whilst in this post or shortly afterwards and have also secured training posts.

The Trust undertakes clinical teaching of medical undergraduates from Manchester and students may visit the trust/Department on an ad hoc basis. This has helped to establish and maintain close links with the Medical School.

The successful candidate will be expected to offer teaching to junior doctors, medical students and other health professionals within the Trust. From time to time the appointee may be asked to teach other professional groups.

The Education Centre has greatly enhanced the postgraduate education facilities. Many lunchtime meetings are held at present in which the appointee would be expected to take a full and active part.

The Trust has a positive attitude towards and encourages the participation of its consultants in continuing professional development to which the Trust provides time and funding for this purpose. The appointee is expected to participate in CPD and fulfill college requirements.

Information relating to patients, employees, and business of the Trust must be treated in the strictest confidence. Under no circumstances should such information be discussed with any unauthorised person(s) or organisations.

Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement are an important part of each Departments Governance. These are aimed at involving all levels of staff.

In line with RCP recommendations, the Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

A willingness to take the lead in implementing the findings of R&D in clinical practice is welcome.

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job.

The clinical fellow will be able to adapt and work with the Trust to deliver optimal patient care.

• MBBS or Equivalent
• Full GMC Registration
• PLAB

Desirable

• Advance Life support certificate
• MRCP parts 1 and 2

Knowledge

Essential

• Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job
• Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk - knows when to seek help, aware of own limitations

Experience

• Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors

Desirable

• Active involvement with QI/audit work
