The ERAS Plus Nurse contributes to the provision of specialist nursing for Colorectal and Urology patients, practicing within the multi-disciplinary team. providing:
Physiological pre-surgical assessment of the patient, including autonomous referral of the patient onto other healthcare professionals.
Providing psychological care to the patient undergoing major abdominal surgery.
Provides specialist advice and education to patients, families, carers and staff on Enhanced Recovery +, in both hospital and the community.
Assesses patients, plans, implements care, provides specialist advice; maintains associated healthcare records.
Co-ordinates other healthcare professionals involved in the care of Colorectal/Urology Enhanced Recovery Patients, including surgeons, anaesthetists, pre-op assessment team, acute pain service, stoma care service, physiotherapists, dieticians and ward nursing staff (does not line manage these staff).
Provides specialist education & training to other staff and students
Undertakes research and leads clinical audits in own specialist area.
Set up and coordinate surgery school/liaising with ERAS pre-assessment team
Link in with community service for pre-habilitation and community based rehabilitation through activity program

- Coordinate and chair Trust wide ERAS+ meetings
- In collaboration with the Stepping Hill audit team ensure regular and robust monitoring and auditing of the quality, benefits and productivity achieved within ERAS+
- Alongside the Colorectal CNS monitor and evaluate patient experience for patients on the ERAS+ programme
- Recognise, understand and accept the requirement to act as an advocate for patients, carers, service and organisation.

- Attend meetings with the Colorectal Cancer CNS, Business Group Heads of Nursing, as required.
- Ensure patients receive appropriate verbal and written information and support in relation to their surgical treatment and discharge post intervention
- Facilitate open and effective communication within the specialist team and external organisations
- Ensure patient pathways are supported by appropriate documentation.
- Develop links with the Clinical Network and other specialist services to facilitate the sharing of good practice as required
- Lead by example, utilising communication skills to ensure timely and effective communication with patients, staff, relatives and carers in relation to care issues
- Assist in the management of patient, relative and staff concerns, liaising with staff in the Patient and Customer Services Department as necessary
