Job summary

CONSULTANT OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNAECOLOGIST

10 PAs

The successful applicant will be expected to supplement the current labour ward leadership team supporting the achievement of all Saving Babies lives 2 criteria and aiding the unit to maintain CNST 3 status as well as participating in responsive actions to the Ockenden review.

The post is substantive and is being advertised to be compliant with the Ockenden review. The successful applicant will play a key role in the provision of acute obstetrics, consultant delivered twice daily obstetric ward rounds along with contribution to acute gynaecology and rapid access clinics for diagnosis of gynaecology malignancies.

They will provide labour ward cover which will allow the department to maintain the consultant delivered service on the labour ward and will participate in the on-call rota.

The post will participate in a fortnightly obstetric only non-resident on call with a 1 in 7 weekend 12 hour resident day shift with compensatory day off. All on-calls are prospective cover.

Main duties of the job

Duties of the post

  • To undertake specific roles as detailed in the tentative job plans.,
  • To provide, together with consultant colleagues increased Consultant presence on Labour Ward and comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynaecology service.
  • To provide twice daily ward round in Obstetrics (labour ward/antenatal/triage)
  • To provide labour ward cover during day time and Twilight and on-call for obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • S/he will have access to hospital beds and facilities for the investigation and treatment of women and will take part in the day to day running of the maternity unit,
  • Responsibility for post take ward rounds ensuring safe care, smooth handover and continuity of care of both inpatients and outpatients
  • The appointee will be expected to undertake an active role in the teaching and training of medical staff, nurses, midwives and medical students.
  • To liaise with General Practitioners, other Consultants and Midwives regarding the type of care necessary for women
  • To take part in clinical governance and to participate in the development and review of guidelines
  • To undertake the necessary administrative work relating to the clinical work
  • To develop their own expertise and specialist clinics consistent with the development of the unit as a whole
  • To comply with Continuing Professional Development requirements including annual appraisal, Job planning and GMC revalidation

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC).
  • MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
  • ATSM in EPU/Acute Gynaecology or equivalent
  • ATSM Advanced Labour ward Practice

Desirable

  • Higher degree or equivalent
  • Colposcopy Training
  • ATSM inbenign abdominal surgery: Open and laparoscopic or equivalent

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT.
