An exciting opportunity has arisen to join The Acute Oncology Service in a fixed term maternity cover Lead Nurse post. We are looking for a motivated individual who would like an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and lead the development of our expanding Acute Oncology Service (AOS). You will lead a team of specialist nurses to deliver the best possible experience for our patients with cancer. You will work closely with Clinical & Medical Oncologists as well as colleagues across the Trust, including ED & medical assessment unit staff, specialist nurses, specialist palliative team care & primary care partners.
Deliver safe, patient centred care supporting early, timely & effective care for patients presenting with complications of cancer & its treatment.
You will work closely with key partners in ED, acute medicine, specialist oncology teams & RNs, & inpatients. Be an experienced nurse able to work as an autonomous practitioner, to assess, plan & implement comprehensive care plans reflecting the holistic needs of individual patients. Act as an expert in your field providing education, advice & support to patients & clinical teams.
Be expected to evaluate the effectiveness of the service, provide assurance & look for ways to develop the service using relevant evidence & research.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to work collaboratively with the Acute Oncology Consultant to lead the Acute Oncology Team (AOT) in the delivery of Acute Oncology Services (AOS) throughout the Trust. The post holder will provide a specialist rapid response service to improve the management and outcomes for patients presenting as an emergency with cancer disease or treatment related problems. The role also requires the post holder to act as a key worker for assessment and management of Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) patients. The post holder will give advice and implement patient care in an area, which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills and experience. The post holder will also work collaboratively with clinical colleagues in oncology, haematology, palliative care, emergency and acute medicine, cancer MDTs, diagnostics and primary and tertiary care to ensure quality of care is maximised. This will include the development of clinical guidelines/ pathways, and education programmes as required

Demonstrate a high level of complex decision making in relation to the assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of patient care
Ensure appropriate pathways in place for patients with Malignancy of Unknown Origin (MUO) or Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP), targeted investigations where appropriate, and rapid triage of patients into oncology and / or specialist palliative care services, via the CUP Multi-disciplinary meeting (MDT)
Contribute to the overall management of the AOS / CUP service within the Trust, working closely with the Associate Director of Nursing for Cancer.
Work autonomously, using well-developed time management and organisation skills, to ensure patients are seen within the required time frame (as per Peer Review Measures for AOS and CUP, 2014).
Ensure the AOS nursing service is working within organisational and national guidance
Work in partnership with other key staff within the AOS / CUP MDT including Oncologists, Haematologists and Specialist Palliative Care Teams, all cancer MDTs, Emergency and Acute Medical Departments. The service is also required to liaise with primary and tertiary care colleagues and the wider hospital nursing and medical teams.
Plan, deliver and evaluate specialist programs of education and training to all grades of staff throughout the Trust, primary care settings and to patients as appropriate.
Implement and undertake clinical audit programs for national, regional and local requirements.
Identify areas for service improvement to ensure urgent cancer admissions are managed according to national and regional guidance
Utilise advanced communication skills relating to people affected by cancer in order to identify and communicate care needs, and support personalized care in keeping with the NHS Long Term Plan (2019)
