Job summary

Vacancy due to internal promotion of previous post holder.

The postholder will be given the opportunity to develop podiatric clinical skills through the delivery of a wide range of evidence based treatments and an active personal development plan. You will be working within our specialist teams to include wound care, diabetes, MDT and musculoskeletal/pain clinics.

The post holder will act as mentor and support to band 5 podiatrists and have an active role in service review and development.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To assess diagnose, develop and implement individualised care programmes for patients with a wide variety of clinical needs, including acute or chronic neuropathies, chronic diseases, vascular problems and wound management.
  • The post holder will also be expected to plan and manage their own caseload, which will include providing specialist care for patients with diabetes, rheumatological and biomechanical problems.
  • To provide an efficient, effective and consistently high quality podiatry service. Working independently in both community and clinical settings.
  • To be responsible for the day to day management of the clinical site with regard to quality and health and safety. This would include managing appointment availability, adequate stock levels, maintenance of equipment, and provision of information to the podiatry team leader to enable effective service planning.

Responsibility for Patient Care

  • To assess all new patients using the locally agreed screening tool in order to decide if NHS Podiatry is appropriate.
  • Provide clinically effective treatments underpinned by evidence based practice following the agreed treatment plan
  • Work alongside community specialist Podiatrists caring for high risk patients, children with complex needs and patients with complicated biomechanical problems.
  • Following treatment to decide when a patient has reached their maximum potential for rehabilitation and discharge with a self-help plan.
  • Work collaboratively with GP's, DN colleagues re: patients with foot ulceration requiring frequent dressing changes.
  • To carry out nail surgery assessments and undertake nail surgery as required
  • To provide patients and their carers with advice to enable them to contribute to their management plan.
  • Make appropriate referrals to podiatric specialities and other Health Care Professionals.
  • Discharge patients from the service if they do not require Podiatry.
  • Empower patients for whom Podiatry is deemed unnecessary to care for their own feet. This usually involves teaching through demonstration to either the patient or their carer and ensuring they have a full understanding of what to do.
  • Assess all patients requiring a home visit, applying the appropriate mobility assessment tool.
  • To participate in diabetes foot screening programme within Primary Care, GP surgeries and Community clinics
  • Create and maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records to facilitate a high standard of patient care and to comply with medical-legal requirements.
  • To have an enhanced knowledge of medical problems and drug management in order assess, and discuss complications relevant not only to the foot, but the whole person.
  • Grade patients in priority order through triaging. Identifying the appropriate allocation of appointment priority and organise immediate treatment for patients with urgent problems.
  • Be involved in supervision and guidance of clinical podiatrists, Podiatry assistants and students.

Planning and organising

  • To be responsible for the day to day planning of personal workload in order to meet the demands of the job role.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining personal and clinical diary.
  • Deal with emergencies and their management, including the consequences of changes to planned timetable.
  • Flexible working will be required; weekend and evening work may be necessary dependant on service demands.
  • To be responsible for ordering stock requisitions and pharmacy and maintain appropriate stock levels for a designated clinic/s.

  • Be responsible for ensuring stock levels are maintained and kept secure.
  • Maintain a clean, risk free clinical environment.
  • Podiatrists will undertake a risk assessment for all domiciliary work.
  • Oversee the safe transfer of patients to and from the treatment couch.
  • Attend any departmental specific training e.g. prevention and control of infection, use of new equipment.
  • Be responsible for the use of medical devices including day to day maintenance and fault reporting at all treatment locations.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety legislation is complied with at all times COSHH, risk assessment, control of infection, decontamination.
