The award winning Stroke team at Stepping Hill hospital is looking for a band 6 nurse to come and join our successful team
Ward E1 is a 30 bedded integrated specialist stroke unit. E1 is unpredictable and fast paced with great job satisfaction. It is an area constantly developing with excellent learning and development opportunities. The teamwork between the medical , nursing and allied health professionals ensures the constant delivery and focus on high quality patient care.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a caring, compassionate individual that is well organised, thrives under pressure and feels ready to develop their leadership skills within a friendly and supportive team.
Stroke experience is not essential as we offer a full in house training package. We offer you excellent managerial support and commitment to your personal professional development. You can access a variety of training courses from Acute Illness Management, ILS to mentorship. The Trust has a number of SLAs with local universities to access a variety of courses.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist patients/service users/carers/relatives during incidental contacts.
- Manage the ward / department in the absence of the Ward Manager/ Team Leader, coordinating the activities of the ward team and deploying resources effectively.
- To effectively co-ordinate care to ensure a seamless and timely pathway of care for patients
- To be a visible and accessible presence in the clinical area for patients, relatives and staff.
- Lead by example and act as a positive role model taking responsibility for own professional development.
- Participate in the in the Business Groups professional on site cover rota as required dealing with professional issues, redeployment of staff and giving advice and support, and liaising with the 1090 bleep holder.
- Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within the ward / department and with relevant external agencies or individuals.
- Organise own workload and adjust priorities in response to issues arising in the workplace.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to issues which require urgent or immediate attention, reporting to other members of the multi-disciplinary/ management team as necessary.
- Maintain ward management records and produce timely management reports at the request of the ward manager or as required in his/ her absence.
- Ensure comprehensive clinical records are maintained.
- Support the management of roster allocation for present and future shifts in order to provide safe staffing levels in line with the agreed workforce model.
- Ensure the provision of compassionate, safe and high quality care of all patients and supervise the working of junior staff and trainees during the span of duty.
- Assist the Ward Manager / Team Leader in supporting and contributing to agreed developments within the Business Group
- Ensure the efficient use of ward resources e.g. bank staff.
- Contribute to the STARS accreditation programme as required.
If successful, this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £43.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary. In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.
