Diabetic Eye Screener/Grader - Orthoptics

Job summary

We are recruiting Diabetic Eye Screener/graders who share our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

To work within the Herts and West Essex Diabetic Eye Screening Programme to deliver diabetic eye screening for patients in the Herts and West Essex area to the highest standards of quality and care.

Previous photographic and/or diagnostic imaging experience is desirable.

We will consider applications for a Trainee Diabetic eye screener, where Agenda for Change conditions will apply.

Full in-house training will be provided, and the post holder must undertake to work towards completion of the Health Screener Diploma

In addition, you will receive a High Cost Area Supplement of 5% of basic salary,subject to a minimum payment of £1,192 and a maximum payment of £2,011.

Main duties of the job

We provide diabetic eye screening at the following sites:

• The Lister Treatment Centre, Stevenage
• New Queen Elizabeth II (New QEII), Welwyn Garden City
• Hertford County Hospital, Hertford
• Cheshunt Community Hospital
• Park Drive Health Centre
• Bedford Road Health Centre
• Central Surgery, Sawbridgeworth

To carry out accurate visual acuity testing of patients

To correctly administer anaesthetic and dilation eye drops prior to retinal photography according todepartmental protocol

To be aware of the possible undesirable effects of dilating drops, and to provide patient educationregarding these.

To take high quality and correctly aligned photographs, guiding eye position using external fixationwhere possible.

Accurate grading of images according to screening programme requirements sending results topatients and their GPs as directed by the clinical lead.

To deal with patients sympathetically and tactfully whilst maintaining confidentiality.

To be involved in the ongoing audit activities of the department

To work towards the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners.

To cover for absence of colleagues for annual leave or sickness according to the needs of theprogramme.

To answer basic patient questions about screening and diabetic retinopathy and to direct the patientto appropriate sources for further information.

Any other duties which may be necessary, according to the needs of the programme.
