Job summary

We are recruiting for a Switchboard / Emergency Operator who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to join our friendly, professional, and extremely busy service.

As switchboard operator/receptionist, you will be the first point of contact from people approaching the Trust by telephone/reception or in an emergency incident within the Trust and will be expected to provide a responsive, effective, calm, and courteous service. Working in autonomy and supported by the Switchboard Service Manager and Switchboard Services Supervisors, the operator will provide an excellent level of service within a Staff rota across a varied shift patterns which includes all days of the week, unsocial hours and public holidays including Christmas.

To be considered you should ideally have previous experience operating a telephone system switchboard console preferably within the NHS or a critical service environment. In return, you can expect to join a highly motivated and experienced team who will actively support you.

Main duties of the job

To be an ambassador for the Hospital Trust Switchboard/Front of House as the first line of contact for Patient, Relatives, Visitors, GP enquiries and other organisations. The team handles call for Lister, Queen Elizabeth II, Hertford County and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre Hospitals.

The operator must be able to make decisions and deal with emergency calls calmly and efficiently in a high-level, fast-moving environment, e.g.; dealing with cardiac arrest calls, trauma calls, fire calls, major incidents, bomb threats, medigas gas alarms and lift entrapments.

Staff are required to work under their own initiative and make immediate decisions in the event of problems, especially when lone working.

Operators are required to operate various computerised systems where IT skills are required, to operate associated forms of communication equipment and undertake all switch room clerical duties.
