Job summary
The Radiation Protection Department at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre provides a physics support and radiation protection service to a number of radiology departments across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and North London. The department is involved in optimisation of cutting edge CT scanners, cardiac catheterisation labs and imaging in radiotherapy.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join our service but will consider applicants still in training at a lower grade. The department has experience supporting staff on the route 2 training path.
Please note - salary for this role is inclusive of High Cost Area Supplement.
Main duties of the job
You will be required to liaise with radiographers, PACS managers, engineers, radiologists and physicists from different specialities.
The Radiation Protection Physics department supports training of its staff and will, where practicable, encourage appropriate training through whatever media are best suited to the post-holder and situation.

Qualifications/Training
Essential
- Good (1st or 2nd Class) Honours degree in a relevant subject (physics or engineering).
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant branch of physics or medical physics to the level of at least a Master's degree (MSc)
Desirable
- Completion of Scientist Training Programme (STP) or equivalent.
- Applicants that can demonstrate they are close to completion of training and registration may be considered for initial appointment on band 6 until they have qualified and registered.
Previous Experience
Essential
- Specialised training and practical experience in DR physics and Radiation Protection.
- Practical experience in the use and quality assurance testing of a range of x-ray imaging equipment
Desirable
- Practical experience on more complex modalities such as CT or mammography
- Experience in laser protection
Skills
Essential
- Ability to use own judgement involving complex facts that require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options as, for example, in analysing the results of scientific measurements or processes, which may conflict, and deciding upon an appropriate course of action.
- Able to use Excel, Word etc. to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information.
