Job summary

A unique opportunity has arisen for an APT Administrator and Tissue Coordinator to join the Mortuary team at West Herts NHS Teaching Trust.

We welcome applications from Level 3 qualified APTs or individuals holding the previous-style APT qualification.

In addition to performing daily Mortuary duties as an APT, you will be responsible for maintaining precise traceability records for all post-mortem retained tissue and whole organs, ensuring compliance with HTA regulations.

Applicants with extensive experience as a Mortuary Assistant or in a similar support role are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday across both the Watford and Hemel sites, supporting the senior team in the daily management of the Mortuary and Post-Mortem workload. Reporting to the senior site APT and the Mortuary Manager, the role will focus on ensuring compliance with regulations related to retained post-mortem tissue.

Following competency assessment, the candidate will be expected to participate in a 1-in-6 on-call rota.

You will have an excellent understanding of the HTA standards and relevant codes especially related to traceability, families wishes and consent for retention.

Essential

  • Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or old style RISPH qualifications.
  • AAPT Consent training.
  • GCSE grades C and above in English, Science and Maths.

Desirable

  • Other higher education qualifications.
  • A-Levels or equivalent in related subjects e.g. Biology.

Knowledge:

Essential

  • Clear understanding of the HTA standards and requirements for retention/disposal of human tissue.
  • Knowledge of documents required after death.

Desirable

  • Good understanding of medical terminology.

Experience:

Essential

  • Experience in the Mortuary and Postmortem room.
  • Experience with all types of Postmortem examination, including high risk.
  • Experience of release of deceased.
  • Experience with bereaved families.

  • Experience with customer facing rolls, involving good communication.
  • Hands on experience with forensic PM cases.
