Job summary
Applications are invited for a full time Consultant Neonatologist for our Local Neonatal Unit (LNU). This is a substantive appointment, based at Watford General Hospital and may include some outpatient work at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.
Post comprises of 10 PAs which includes 1:7 attending week and on-call commitment to Neonatal service. Sub-speciality interests that align with service needs e.g., paediatric cardiology, neurodevelopmental and/or neonatal nutrition desirable.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a forward thinking and enthusiastic neonatal team. The successful applicant will join an existing team of 5 neonatal consultants in the journey of progression towards 1:7 in due course.

Main duties of the job
The Trust maternity services have about 4,000 deliveries per annum. The neonatal service provides medical care for infants from 27 weeks' gestation; it has 2 intensive, 5 high dependency, 12 special care and 6 transitional care cots. Neonatal unit is part of the East of England Operational Delivery Network with pathways for extreme preterm care to Luton and Dunstable Hospital, cardiac and surgical pathways to centres in London. Neonatal unt admissions circa 900/year and 6000 care days across all care levels.
The Children Services of the Trust has a Paediatric Assessment Unit, Children's Emergency Department and Children's ward led by a team of 14 acute Consultant Paediatricians.

The consultant working arrangements may change responsive to service needs and subject to formal annual job plan review. It is anticipated that there will be a change of responsibilities with further expansion in consultant establishment. This will also be linked to regular performance review and appraisal cycle with view to identifying continuing professional development needs.
The new postholder will join the other neonatal consultants in doing a full attending week on the neonatal unit at 1 in 7 frequency. The neonatal attending consultant is responsible for clinical management of all admissions and in patients on the neonatal unit, supervising and teaching junior doctors and nurses, conducting daily ward rounds and handovers, regular parent communication and collaboratively engagement with maternity.
It is expected that the neonatal consultant attends all deliveries less than 30 weeks gestation, high risk deliveries that meet complexity criteria for Tier 3 attendance and any other request by the neonatal, midwifery and obstetric teams.
Out of hours on call rota will be 1: 7 with prospective cover but exclusive for neonatal service without any acute paediatric commitment. On call commitments include daily ward round at weekends and bank holidays.
