Job summary

We are seeking a substantive, full-time consultant gastroenterologist with a subspeciality interest in Hepatology.

You will join a team of eleven gastroenterologists at West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who enjoy working together and supporting each other.

You should be a dynamic, competent clinician and endoscopist with a CCT in gastroenterology and general medicine and experience working within the NHS. To complement our team, you should demonstrate interest in Hepatology. Our Gastroenterology department currently has 2 consultants with a special interest in Hepatology, 3 specialist nurses, 2 transient electrography machines, and a dedicated point of care US Machine, Endoscopic US and ERCP service.

There may be options to develop additional subspeciality interests in conjunction with departmental needs.

This post has 10 programmed activities. There is a 1:11 on-call rota for "consultant of the week" inpatient cover and overnight on-call for GI bleed.

We are looking for the prospective candidate to start as soon as possible.

  • Successful candidates will be also eligible for a relocation allowance of up to £12,000 (if required)/ pro rata.

The Trust have agreed a proposal for up to 1PA of SPA time/week to be worked flexibly.

This change in in line with the Trusts' flexible working agenda and recognition of the enormous contribution that this group of staff continue to provide to our staff and patients.

Main duties of the job

Endoscopy (Elective, training, and inpatient emergency)

  • Outpatient work (Clinics, Referral Vetting, GP advice and guidance)
  • Inpatient work (Consultant of the week to cover GI ward, Ward referrals, ED in-reach)
  • Weekend work (6 hours on site ward and emergency endoscopy)
  • MDTs including Hepatology and HPB Cancer.
  • Clinical governance and service development and research

You will be expected to be able to travel to all 3 Trust hospital Sites (Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans Hospital).

You will take part in clinical governance and clinical risk management, and in their implementation, including audit.
