Applicants are invited to apply for a fixed term post for ENT Trust Senior House Officer within the West Hertfordshire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust consists of three hospitals in the West Hertfordshire area, Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead General Hospital and St Albans City Hospital. ENT services are provided across all three sites managed by a single Department. There is an integrated programme of service provision and development across the Trust. Emergency care is organised across a wider regional network in association with another ENT Department in a neighbouring NHS Trust.
The ENT department is seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated and dedicated people with the ability to work with the ENT team to provide a comprehensive ENT service across the whole Trust. The post involves sessions on all three sites providing elective and emergency care across the area.
Main duties of the job
The duties of the Trust Senior House Officer will include:
Continuing care of inpatients and day case patients.
Operating lists according to experience, interest and service requirements.
A proportion of inpatient and day case record keeping, discharge paper work, ward rounds and also occasional clerking.
The post Holder will be expected to contribute to post graduate meetings including audit.
So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise for absent colleagues on acute and elective sites and exceptionally to perform additional duties in the emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
About us
This is a full-time fixed term Trust SHO Doctor post available immediately. The successful candidate will join a team of ENT Doctors and Audiology staff within the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is a post for an ENT Trust SHO to start as soon as possible. The successful candidates will join a busy ENT Department within the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The post involves sessions on all three sites providing elective and emergency care across the area.
Adult inpatient and day case surgery is carried out on the Watford and St Albans sites and paediatric inpatient and day case surgery on the Watford site. On-call arrangements are currently 2 weekday nights per week with no weekends on-call, but this may be subject to change. The successful candidate will support the current workload of the Department as well as planned service development at SHO level.

The successful candidate must have full registration with the General Medical Council and suitable experience is ENT Surgery. The successful candidate should be committed to Continuing Professional Development that satisfies the criteria laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons. Resources will be provided by the Trust for study leave, within current study leave entitlement and financial support for CPD activities within a set budget. The post holder will have an overriding duty of care to patients and is expected to comply fully with best practice standards.
The successful candidate will fully contribute to administrative activities within the Department, taking responsibility for areas appropriate to clinical interest and availability. West Hertfordshire NHS Trust is committed to the National Plan for Modernisation of the NHS and the post holder will assist the Trust in achieving its objectives therein. The post holder will contribute to teaching in the Department and participate in Clinical Governance, Audit, Departmental and Training meetings.
The ENT Department has its own programme of educational and governance meetings, both local and regional. There are good opportunities for training during the post. Junior doctors receive a full induction programme on commencement of their post in line with the recommendations set down by the Royal Colleges and Faculty of Emergency Medicine. There are in addition regular educational meetings within the Department for junior medical staff.
There are very active Postgraduate Medical Centres on the Watford and St Albans hospital sites, with lecture theatres, seminar rooms and well stocked libraries taking a number of journals relevant to A&E Medicine, and with facilities for on-line literature searches and Medline on CD-ROM. There is a full time administrator and a librarian at both hospitals. Regular lunchtime meetings are held for the local General Practitioners and Hospital Medical Staff. The department is fully committed to the practice of Medical and Clinical Audit. There are regular Audit Presentations in the Department held jointly with nursing staff.
Salary Scale: Trust Senior House Officer £33,790 - £44,705 per annum
