Consultant Stroke Physician (Joint post with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust)

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant Stroke Physician.

This post is a joint post which will be primarily based at Watford General Hospital where most of the clinical sessions will occur whilst also contributing to the thrombectomy service at the neurosciences centre at Charing Cross Hospital.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, friendly stroke team of three Substantive Stroke Consultants at Watford General Hospital and be part of the larger medicine for the Elderly department.

At Charing Cross Hospital, the appointee will deliver 2 PAs and help deliver the thrombectomy service at Charing Cross which is a 24/7 thrombectomy service.

  • Successful candidates will be also eligible for a relocation allowance of up to £8,000 (if required)

Main duties of the job

At Watford Hospital, the appointee will provide 8.5PA of inpatient and outpatient services, including support of the thrombolysis service (9:00-17:00), provision of ward rounds on the hyper-acute and acute Stroke Unit and participation in Stroke outpatient clinic and TIA clinics.

At Charing Cross the post holder will work long days 09:00-20:00 every 2 weeks (1.5 DCC) on a Friday. On those days they will also supervise the SHO/SPR delivered TIA clinic, a commitment that is generally easily fitted in to the day's acute work.

The on-call commitment is based at Charing Cross and consists of 0.5 DCC for weekend working on a 1 in 16 weekends on call at Charing Cross Hospital covering Stroke thrombolysis & thrombectomy rota and HASU ward rounds with the appointee being resident 09:00-20:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Workload for HASU days at Charing Cross hospital is variable with 1-6 thrombolysis calls/acute admissions, 0-2 thrombectomy patients' assessments, and 1-8 TIA patient reviews.
