Job summary

Emergency Assessment Unit overseen by the Acute Physicians offering assessment, investigation and treatment to acutely unwell medical and surgical patients. Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) is open from 24 hours. EAU is supported by a speciality doctor, a trust clinical fellow and acute physician weekdays 9am-5pm, out of hours cover is from on call medical team. Normal working hours for Trust SHO post in EAU would be 9am-5pm (Monday- Friday).

This post is for a period of 1 year. The post holder will work under supervision of a consultant Acute Physician. During the period of the contract in this department doctors are expected to become competent at organising the day-to-day duties of this clinical area.

The postholder may, on occasions, be asked to assist in the teaching of medical students.

Main duties of the job

Daily review of medical patients in Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU)

Care of the acute EAU inpatients i.e performing relevant investigations, following up results, monitoring of patients, liaising with other specialities, communication with patients and families, completing discharge summaries etc.

Responsible for ensuring adequate clinical notes are made in accordance with good medical practice.

To work closely with appropriate nursing, professional, technical, and administrative and support staff.

A part of the work may also involve working in the Acute Assessment Unit.

Actively participate in weekly AAU teaching and departmental audits.

Junior doctors are required to perform duties over and above their contracted hours in occasional emergencies and in unforeseen circumstances, at the request of the Clinical Director of the service.

About us

The West Herts & Watford PGMC offers an extensive programme of regular weekly postgraduate education. The post holder will be expected to participate in this programme.

The post holder will need to take an active part in clinical governance and clinical risk management, and in their implementation, including audit.

The Acute Medical team is made up of 7 consultants, 4 Trust specialty doctors (SpR level) 1 of whom is based in Ambulatory Care Unit, 12 trainee doctor posts (Foundation Year 1 and 2) and 3 Trust SHOs. The team are based in the AAU and are responsible for all medical patients post admission before transfer to specialist wards and for those in short stay medical beds . There is an emphasis on multidisciplinary working with the nursing and therapy staff working within the unit.

This is a Trust SHO post working within the integrated Acute Medicine Department, based at Watford General Hospital. The delivery of Acute Medicine in the AAU is dependent upon high quality medical decision making and care. This is led by the team of 7 consultant Acute Physicians.

All medical admissions referred by GPs or via A&E are seen and assessed in the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU ) and Acute Admissions Unit (AAU). Stroke and patients with suspected MI are exceptions and are fast-tracked directly to specialist areas. Consultant Acute Physicians and specialist physicians share the physician of the day rota and are based in AAU 08.00 to 21.00 hours weekdays and 08.00 to 21.00 hours at weekends.
