Job summary
An exciting opportunity to work within the West Kent Medical Examiner Service has arisen. The successful candidate will support both the Medical Examiners and Officers within their roles of preparation and scrutiny of all deaths for both hospital and community cases.
The position involves being a point of contact and advice for nominated family representatives and healthcare professionals in relation to the Medical Examiner service; also for coroner and registration services
To monitor and advise on any trends that occur within the causes and circumstances surrounding deaths and raise any reports necessary to inform other relevant depts. for learning purposes
Main duties of the job
To line manage the MEOs, support the MEs individually and collectively as required to help deliver and maintain a high-quality Medical Examiner service for all deaths.
Understand clinical pathways and clinical interactions to support the service, and manage work load allocation to MEs by medical speciality.
To be able to accommodate frequent re-prioritising of duties in response to service pressures and frequent interruptions e.g. bereaved relatives, clinical team members etc.
To be able to continue to work to a high standard under pressure with potential to be an emotionally charged environment.
To act as a senior intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians to establish and resolve any concerns relating to a patient's death.
To work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders for the purposes of ensuring statutory requirements are maintained, demonstrating insight and understanding of ethical and legal issues.
To oversee systematic process for highlighting individual deaths for assessment by: The Structured Judgement Review (SJR) process, Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP), Clinical Governance teams and the Learning Disability Review Teams (LeDeR).

- Educated to Bachelors Degree level or evidence of study/equivalent
- Experience at an advanced level - e.g. may include clinical and /or another supervisory role within a health care setting
- Completion of the on-line Medical Examiner initial 26 core training modules - expectation completed within 6 months
Desirable
- Attended the 1-day MEO training course at the Royal College of Pathology
- Experience in the day-to-day operational management of a customer-facing service
- Clinical or voluntary registration
Experience /Knowledge
Essential
- Clinical and/or supervisory experience within a healthcare, bereavement or funeral service
- Experience of quality management, and incident reporting
- Detailed knowledge of medical and clinical terminology that enables informed discussions about causes/circumstances of death
- Experience of delivering complex information in emotive and potentially challenging circumstances
- Knowledge of the statutory process around death certification legal frameworks
- Current continuing professional development record
- Experience of writing reports and presentations and delivering training
